Native bees and the Great Western Woodlands

"A new species of native bee with devil-like "horns" has been discovered in Western Australia's Goldfields...Mining is basically wholesale destruction. Whilst they can do a bit of rehab, they're never ever going to put things back how they were, realistically...Dr Prendergast said native bee surveys were not required by mining companies or agricultural enterprises when clearing land, and, like other invertebrates, bees tend to miss out on the conservation limelight."

My linocut prints on cream coloured washi paper, drying on a tabletop. 6 are visible. Each shows a bunch of white blueberry flowers and leaves printed in pale green with hints of red on buds and a blue orchard mason bees on the lowest flower.

Northeastern North America might not have the lush colours of the tropics but I still think the metallic green sweat bees (_Agapostemon_) on the bright purple and saffron New England aster (_Symphyotrichum novae-angliae_) are just as fine to look at as any rainforest scene.

So, I can say that given the observations made by myself, my hubby and my neighbors, the bumblebees have made a HUGE comeback in #SouthernMaine this year (despite the drought)! There were very low #Bumblebee populations last year (more #CarpenterBees and #honeybees and a few smaller #NativeBees). A lot of us are #GardeningForPollnators and #GardeningWithoutChemicals , so I think that's helping!

I worry about the native bees and pollinators. I plant native plants to support them. Honey bees compete with native bees for resources.

In prior years, we has a decent amount of bumblebees in our urban oasis. This year, someone close by must have started a hive. I saw a lot of honey bees and very few bumblebees.

The island that banned hives: can honeybees actually harm nature?

Can honeybees harm the environment? You bet: they deprive native bees of nectar and pollen.

@plants A very short video (YouTube link here, #Spectra to follow) of several different bees busily working the composite flowers of Saussurea riederi an Asian Sawwort and cousin to Asters, in the #garden . With quirky, low-key music and a bit of wind and bird sound behind, maybe...

Two bees- a smallish pale gold and black bumblebee and a leaner, smoother (low pale fuzz mostly on thorax) black leafcutter bee with thin white bands on abdomen, are busily working on a cluster of purply flower heads. Each 'flower' is actually a composite of many tiny florets which are light purple tubes emerging from a fuzzy white base. From the purple tubes, dark violet/nearly black thin structures- like grains of wild rice- emerge and those are tipped with the white actual flower sexy bits. The background is blurred green foliage, some sunlit some dark shadowed. There is a white border and in lower right in loose script the words 'bees love Saussureas!' in white.

A little #scicomm in the garden: you might remember I repurposed one of the prints I was working on for #ManufacturedEcosystems for a local pollinator garden. It’s now up, with its hand-printed collection of native bees and message in amongst the pollinators (native and introduced) in the garden.

A few other pollinators in this 🧵

Common Eastern bumblebee on anise hyssopDisplay case in pollinator garden with my 16” x 20” linocut print with a ring of bees plus one in the middle with collaged text in bronze. Clockwise from top: two leaf cutter bees (Megachile relativa and M. brevis), blue orchard mason bee (Osmia lignaria), the rusty patched bumblebee (Bombus affinis), a sweat bee (Agapostemon sericeus), eastern carpenter bee (Xylocopa virginica), the common eastern bumblebee (B. impatiens), a long-horned bee (Melissodes sp.) and centre: eastern snail-shell nesting bee (O. conjuncta). The text reads “Our Fate is Tied to that of the Insects” in a ring around the assorted bees. Some small typed signs with captions are included.

#InsectSaturday

🪷 Looks like I'll be getting gifts from local pollinators. First, I let locally native Maypops (Passiflora incarnata) grow in my #garden. Complex and beautiful flowers.

🐝 Then I enjoy Carpenter Bees, very important native pollinators, while they do their thing. The caterpillars of the Gulf Fritillary butterfly also eat the leaves as their sole source of food. So I enjoy those butterflies as well.

🥝 Later, when the fruit grows and turns purple, I get Maypops to eat with their tropical tartness. And I don't have to go to the store. Thanks, pollinators!

I l'he trobada!
