The spoon theory has a blind spot for ADHDers, it assumes you can perceive the capacity daily.

I can't. I've got everyday am 8am to 2pm 40 spoons existence, followed by a very long up to 8 or 9pm 10 spoons existence, followed by a whatever the time I go to sleep 50 spoons existence.

But it's nice to know about it because not everybody is a delayed sleep phase statistical average ADHDer. In my case there are two winds, and I can make them both 50/50 spoons if I nap right in the middle of them. 🤔

It's very interesting though 👇

The invisible math of chronic illness: before saying yes to anything, you're calculating energy reserves, recovery time, medication timing, and whether you'll pay for it tomorrow.

It's not laziness. It's a constant equation that healthy people never have to solve.

With bipolar, my energy fluctuates, so my habits do too.
On bad days, I do the easy version of my care routines.
Doing a little is better than doing nothing. 🥄

Some service work looks loud.
Some of it looks like naps, boops, and refusing to let your human push too far.

A Sunday post from Bed Jail™ about rest, spoon theory, and why quiet service work still counts. 🐾🛏️

Equity will always benefit disabled people over equality. Equality's default is a society built for non disabled folks only. Equity listens to specific needs and accommodations. 🥄🥄🥄

Gradient turquoise and green background with two sets of black text, two images of a crow named Rye, and two sets of the great grey owl named Bagel, elf owl named Peanut, great horned owl named Kiwi, and pygmy owl named Coffee. The owls and crow hold spoons in various ways.
The first set of the graphic has Rye staying, "EQUALITY IS EVERYONE GETTING THE SAME SPOON, ASSUMING ONE SIZE FITS ALL." All of the owls have the same silver spoon as Rye and aren't satisfied.
The second set of the graphic has Rye saying, "EQUITY IS EVERYONE GETTING THE SPOON THAT WORKS BEST FOR THEM AND THEIR INDIVIDUAL NEEDS." All the owls are happy with their unique spoon, Bagel holding a bigger wooden spoon, Peanut holding a smaller sparkly purple spoon, Kiwi holding a bigger mauve spoon, and Coffee holding a little spoon with a light green handle.
There is a rainbow infinity sign logo with a black and brown eye in each of the two centers. Under the eyes in pastel brown text reads "Actually" and "Owltistic".

Gerne boosten.

Check your #SocialBattery and show it to others! At the #QuietCube they have these nifty 3D printed indicators. Highly recommended if you need to budget your #spoons.

A hand holding a black tag indicating the ‘social battery’ of the bearer. There are four bars from high (blue) to low (red). Below the bars is a movable indicator. It is almost at the minimum.

I think I am seriously out of #spoons. 😵‍💫 I’m going back to my hotel and watch some streams.

'Spoon theory' is a concept used in psychotherapy to explain various aspects around the energy and motivation you need to live your daily life.

According to the concept, everyone has a finite amount of 'spoons' in a day. They're not literal spoons, but a metaphor for one's physical and emotional energy.

To do something, you expend energy, represented by these 'spoons' as some kind of currency. Just getting out of bed might 'cost' one spoon, but doing all your laundry might cost three spoons.

In the end, you might need or want to do more things than you have spoons for. In that case, you'd be out of spoons: out of energy. You simply can't do anything more. It's impossible no matter how important it is, since you have no more spoons to spend.

Forcing yourself to do something despite having no spoons to expend results in a kind of 'debt'; you'll start the next day with less spoons.

The point of this concept is to illustrate that your emotional and physical energy is a finite resource, and overstressing yourself beyond your limits is either harmful or outright impossible. This might help people who struggle with understanding their own or others' limits; some people don't believe in the idea that doing something can be impossible for someone, after all.

The post itself is a joke based on a double meaning.

To prepare soup for a lot of people, you'd require metaphorical spoons (i. e. energy) because cooking is a stressful activity, which mirrors the fact that you'd also need to provide literal spoons as utensils for everyone to enjoy the food.

Anybody else ever kind of want to explain certain neurodivergent and/or spoonie concepts in D&D 5E terms to people who don't quite understand?

For example:

Neurospicy rage

You get a variant of Rage, customised to the player character after a discussion with the DM.

Unlike the standard Rage that Barbarians have, you don't choose whether to enter it during combat. Instead, you have to roll a saving throw when certain events happen... both in and out of combat.

If you fail, you enter your specific variant of rage.

DM: "Okay. You've entered AuDHD rage."

You will get some temporary boosts, but there may be damaging conditions afterwards, such as:

  • Taking a point of Exhaution.
  • Losing the ability to speak (Verbal Shutdown) for D4/D6/D8 etc. hours.
  • Experiencing a near-total inability to do anything (Meltdown) for D4/D6/D8 etc. hours.
    • This may look similar to the short-term effects under the optional madness mechanic in 5E.

Spoons

You have a number of Spoons each day, customised to the player character.

Taking certain actions will require you to spend Spoons, like the Ki points that Monks have.

Player: "I'll spend 1 Spoon to take a Short Rest."

If you run out of Spoons, you may choose to take certain actions, but there will be negative consequences, such as:

  • Taking a point of Exhaustion.
    • This could be reflavoured as Knives, since spoonies draw on these when out of Spoons.
  • Starting the next day with fewer Spoons.
  • Mental and physical injuries.
    • For each consecutive day where you continue to take actions after running out of Spoons, there will be increasing risks to your character.

Neurospicy Recall and Infodump

Neurospicy Recall would be a variant of the Keen Mind feat.

You pick a Special Interest during character creation, and get to add additional ones as you level up.

You can recall random facts almost perfectly, but only if they occurred greater than a month ago.

If you wish to remember something clearly within the last month, or a very-specific fact or word, you will need to roll a Memory check. The more-recently something occurred and the more you wish to remember it, the more difficult the DC will be.

If a fact or word relates to a Special Interest, you do not need to roll, as you automatically succeed. However, you will then proceed to Infodump about it.

If you're trying to recall a being's name, unless they are directly linked to a Special Interest, your immediate family, or a best friend, you have disadvantage on the roll.

Just watched a goodly short by a content creator who struggled with long-COVID for about 2 years.

5 things healthy people take for granted

For anyone who wants to read the text, rather than the short, here's a transcript we generated quickly from the audio using Subtitle Edit. (It only needed one word change and a couple of minor apostrophe edits.)

I haven't done one of these videos in ages, but here are five things that healthy people take for granted.

Number one is being able to do everyday basic things. Getting out of bed, climbing the stairs, cooking, every single everyday thing. Healthy people can just do all of it without questioning any of it. Healthy people are just able to function normally in everyday life.

Number two is that most healthy people can just move their bodies whenever they want. Sorry, what do you mean that you can just go on a run or exercise or move? With all that excess energy they can just push their body to the extreme without any consequences. Unlike like a couple of days maybe recovery time.

Healthy people can just make plans and schedule in a coffee date for a few weeks' time without even like thinking about it. Because of course they're gonna be able to make it. They just plan and then they just do.

Okay, they never have to think of spoons. Only when like they're doing the dishwasher or eating soup. Healthy people do not need to track or ration their energy. So they don't need a language for it. There's no budgeting their energy for different tasks. Spoons are merely pieces of metal they find in their cutlery drawer.

Most of the time, healthy people do not need to advocate for their own health. Most might not even know what the term medical gaslighting is or they may have never experienced it. There's no anxiety around doctors' appointments. They're not fighting anyone for answers or support. It's such a privilege to be believed and receive empathy.

So yeah, if you're healthy and you might not even think about these things or perhaps take them for granted, just know that there are people who are chronically ill or perhaps have poor health that do not have these privileges.
