Finished swapping 2 refurbished Xeon CPUs across my #supermicro motherboards. And moving the CPUs down the server line.
8260 replaced 4216, and the 4216 replaced the 4116. A bit more thermals, but more CPU capacity for larger VMs.

Einer der alten #SuperMicro #X7DB8 bzw. #X7DBE Server mit diesen ungeilen First-gen XEONs und 32 bzw. 64GB DDR2-ECC RAM, die man aktiv kühlen musste, was weder vorgesehen noch vernünftig zu realisieren war...

Und dann zwar mit zwei Netzteilen, aber die Kisten haben so viel Strom gebraucht, dass mit etwas Pech die Kiste ausging, wenn ein Netzteil vom Strom genommen wurde...

Zunächst als ESX Hosts und danach als ZFS Server...

I was thinking a single PSU and CPU might save a bit of electricity, heat, and noise. But there are so maaaaany variables.

#NAS experts:
I'm thinking of abandoning my #Rpi5 ZFS NAS project because the 8-bay drive box has no software-controlled power switch. I can gracefully shut down the brain and save the data, but can't cut the enormous draw on the UPS. Seems counter-productive.

So I'm going to return the drive-stack, and try for a used #SuperMicro 1U and run #TrueNAS on it.

I actually might save money with this plan.

Should I just shoot myself now? Other 1U ideas? (Ext. noise, heat, and power are concerns.)

Anyone got #supermicro Oculink to SFF-8611 cables known to work as spare and want to get rid of them? I could use two 😅🙏

All drives are NVMe 1.2
All drives are PCI Express Gen3 x4
All drives are U.2
The working NVMe is conected with an original #supermicro Oculink to SFF-8611 cable while the other two using a noname one since way cheaper. I doubt the cable is the issue since devices are showing just fine in BMC.

Can anyone tell me how this is even possible? #supermicro X11QPH+, running #Linux 6.15.5. Bifurcation is set to 4x4x4x4 and all pci slots set to UEFI...

Сегодня я расскажу, как мы обнаружили проблемы с производительностью на современном китайском оборудовании, которое можно встретить в ЦОДах крупных российских компаний. Печальная история о том, как 10 материнских плат Gooxi из Шеньчженьска оказались критически непригодными для использования в НЕ самых сложных задачах. График ниже показывает с чем мы столкнулись. При использовании серверного решения Труконф обнаружили проблему: служба видеоконференцсвязи нагружала систему значительно сильнее, чем должна была. В первую очередь подумали на процессор, но замена укомплектованного Xeon Gold 6336Y на Xeon 4316 не решила проблему с производительностью. А вот замена материнской платы Gooxi на проверенную SuperMicro при тех же составляющих дала ощутимый рост. При работе на 10 ядрах — более чем в 2 раза. Для чистоты эксперимента на SuperMicro были протестированы на комплектном Xeon Gold 6336Y и на Xeon 4316, результаты можете наблюдать сами.

I cannot stress enough how happy I am having a #Supermicro [0] board for my #NAS for so many years now. Not only is the hardware well supported under FreeBSD and Linux, also is their support excellent. Over the years I called them about 3 times and got the best information to my questions I could hope for. At my old job we had lots of SuperMicro hardware and so do we have at the job I am working for now. Great hardware, excellent customer support. Thank you!
