Apparently I missed Sustrans rebranding. Also apparently they found it hard to describe what they stood for (is "Sustainable Transport" difficult to understand?).

A friend of mine told me that, when he did some work for them, they didn't have anywhere to park bikes nearby, but that was decades ago.

@mathowie

You might be tickled by a charity in the UK, formerly known as "Sustrans" who have, among other things, made it their mission to turn disused rail lines into bicycle-paths & footpaths.

National Cycle Network Millennium Milepost on the Clyde Walkway by the Bells Bridge in Glasgow. The sculpture was designed by Andrew Rowe, and takes inspiration fron the nautical and industrial heritage of his native Swansea. The rather striking paintwork was designed by Impact Arts and was done in 2022.

Landslide washes away section of Carmarthenshire cycle path

Path collapse near Tumble

The Walk Wheel Cycle Trust Cymru (formerly Sustrans) confirmed that a landslide has taken out part of the route linking Tumble and Pontyberem. The charity’s estates team has been on site to close the affected section and warn users not to approach the area.

A spokesperson said:

“Please do not approach the site as it is extremely dangerous and unstable. Our team are working to close the path and ensure route users are aware on the ground. We are working with local partners to secure the site and it will remain closed. A diversion will be put in place as soon as possible.”

Council urges public to stay away

Carmarthenshire County Council confirmed the landslide and said the area has been fenced off. A spokesperson added:

“There has been a significant landslide which has taken out a section of the Sustrans Cycle Route linking Tumble and Pontyberem. We urge the public to keep away from the area for safety reasons. The path is owned and maintained by Sustrans, now known as the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust.”

Climate change warning

Local Member of the Senedd Lee Waters described the collapse as a stark reminder of the impact of extreme weather. Sharing an image of the damaged path, he said:

“The impact of flooding is being felt right across the local area today. This picture of the cycle path washed away near Tumble is a pretty stark illustration of how climate change is impacting us here and now – the experts are agreed that heavy rainfall and more intense storms are a direct consequence of man‑made climate change.”

He also thanked the emergency services, Carmarthenshire Council and local volunteers for their efforts in supporting communities affected by flooding over the past 24 hours.

Wider flooding impact

The landslide comes as Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service declared a major incident following more than 450 flooding‑related calls in 12 hours, with rescues carried out in Whitland, Ferryside, Kidwelly, Lampeter and St Clears. Swansea has also been hit, with Cwmbwrla roundabout once again submerged.

I hope the newly-renamed 'Walk Wheel Cycle Trust' can come up with a better Welsh name than 'Walk Wheel Cycle Trust yng Nghymru'.

I guess that was absent from the discussions when the rebrand of #Sustrans took place 🤷

Sustrans has gone very much with the 'does exactly what it says on the tin' approach for their rebrand. #sustrans #walkwheelcycletrust #activetravel #cycling #walking

Lovely cycle from Bristol to Frome and back today. Idylic scenery and route. Followed Google maps cycling directions on the way there and Sustrans National Cycle Route on the way back - definitely recommend the latter, which Google doesn't pick. Well done #sustrans for building and keeping the path, plus clear direction signs everywhere

Somebody on another platform is #cycletouring Britain ticking off millennium mileposts. He's heading to #orkney now and trying to track down if the three indicated on thie map ever existed. Does anyone have any info or old pictures?

Shout-out to Sustrans, the organisation that the national cycle network. We used their maps, tied together a dozen different of their routes and thus cycled around the UK managing to avoid most A- and B-roads. Lots of fun traffic free trails and quiet(ish) little lanes. A few crazy mountain bike tracks not entirely appropriate for our heavily loaded touring bikes. Great fun. Good job, Sustrans!

A National Cycle Networt Millennium Mile Post on the Clyde Walkway in Glasgow. Erected in 2000, this is one of four post designs. It was created by Andrew Rowe, and is based upon the nautical and industrial heritage of his native Swansea. A programme to repaint as many of the mile posts as possible began in 2021, with each one being painted in its own unique way.

Completely missed that it's the annual #Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel Week! As usual, there are only two schools taking part in the borough, both in #Nuneaton - well done to both Whitestone Infants and Chetwynd Junior schools. It'd be great to see more getting involved

In a bid to help more people make that first pedal stroke, we wanted to commission a guide on how to find your local cycling routes from your doorstep for our last Cycling Electric print edition.

Who better to take that on than Richard Peace whose guides to the national cycling network have been the reference point for so many of us for decades already?

Did my good deed for the week today when I did a little voluntary work for #Sustrans (UK cycling/active travel charity & advocates). They were looking for people to audit paths that linked with the national cycle network & I finally did my section today.

Walked the route cos I thought I could be more thorough that way. Was supposed to be 5 miles but ended up walking 9 miles. My feet are sad...

Took some photos along the way...

@BicycleBen while we're on this, the choice of roads for the #sustrans National Cycle Network also seems pretty anti-cyclist. I'm thinking particularly of the NCN7 west from Dumfries, which chooses hillier, more twisty routes with poor sightlines over flatter, straighter routes with better visibility.

As routes for effective #ActiveTravel, they're more or less useless.
