Anyone currently or previously involved in a time bank? Been talking with some people about starting a local one but very curious about others' experiences. #timebank #mutualaid #circulareconomy
In a first for Kerala, Elikkulam Panchayat in Kottayam has introduced a ‘Time Bank’ initiative that allows volunteers to earn time credits by assisting senior citizens. https://english.mathrubhumi.com/news/kerala/elikkulam-kottayam-time-bank-seniors-kerala-n5c4y2kf?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon #KeralaNews #Elikkulam #TimeBank #CommunityWelfare #SeniorCitizens
Digital Tools Are Fueling the Rise of New “Time Exchange” Solidarity Economies
Through time exchanges, members earn time credits by helping others, then redeem them when they need help themselves.I'm currently writing up my notes from a travel fellowship where I visited #timebank #MutualAid networks and related projects in USA ...but have randomly come across some stuff about early #confucianism on grassroots leadership and reciprocity and would like to know more but don't know where to start.. particularly interested in works by #Tasan #ChongYagyong on leadership and farming but don't have access to research papers. For the #kdrama fans out there #Tasan is a distant relative of #JungHaeIn .. any suggestions or links to translations would be gratefully received. Thanks
So, years ago, when I lived in #PortlandMaine, I was part of a #TimeBank, where I offered computing and web assistance to others, in exchange for rides, mending, artwork and sometimes food (the local food co-op was part of the Time Bank). It was a good system and a way to connect with community and provide #MutualAid and share skills!
TimeBanking 101
"Time banking replaces money. Provide an hour of service to your neighbor and earn one time dollar. A TimeBank is a network of members that have agreed they will provide and receive services from each other, albeit not directly. (This is not Barter.) Nothing is given 'in consideration of' and there are no binding contracts. Members have a moral obligation of reciprocity to the community.
Five Core Values:
- Human Value: We recognize the intrinsic value of every human being regardless of race, creed, color, or station in life.
- Human Equality: We honor the presence of every living spirit on this planet and consider that we are all equally sacred.
- Human Partnership: We believe that when we work together to meet each others needs, every human being will be cared for.
- Human Effort: We honor the contribution of every human being equally, regardless of how slight or grand it may be.
- Human Reward: We each apply ourselves to what we love. As members of the human family we are entitled to share in the proceeds of our collective activity."

Been travelling around #WestCoastUSA for my #ChurchillFellowship visiting #Timebank #MutualAid schemes and related projects... Stayed with a lovely woman in #California who got these especially for me 🫖😃 Funnily enough..I'd never had these at home..but they are actually rather nice!
I'm heading to #WestCoastUSA today for part 2 of my #ChurchillTravelFellowship to meet with lots of interesting #Timebank and #MutualAid projects. Starting in #Seattle and ending in #LosAngeles where I'll be seeing some of the people in this film. The whole reason I am coming is because I met #EdgarCahn at a conference in 2018 and he suggested I visit. Sadly he died 2 years ago but I am doing this trip with his widow #ChrisGray who is still very involved with #Timebanking https://www.filmsforaction.org/watch/time-as-money-a-documentary-film-about-time-banking/ Film is on @filmsforaction site and they have just joined here so say hello and give them a follow.
Phew...work phone handed over so feeling liberated!! Off to #WestCoastUSA for part 2 of my #ChurchillTravelFellowship to visit all sorts of interesting #Timebank and #MutualAid schemes.. starting in #Seattle and back from #LA 🇺🇲
I'm heading to #WestCoast #USA in Feb for a couple of weeks to visit #Timebank and #MutualAid projects as part of my #ChurchillFellowship .. have a few visits booked but any suggestions or contacts gratefully received for interesting folk to see in and around #Seattle #SanFrancisco #Sacramento #LosAngeles
Off on my #ChurchillFellowship leaving next weekend - current plan is a week or so around #WashingtonDC #Baltimore and rural #Pennsylvania then on to #Boston and #PortlandMe and then maybe a few days break in #Montreal - #Detroit and around then #Chicago and #Austin. Will have an #Amtrak pass and using trains ..but with #covid rife here and there, #ExtremeWeather and impending #Shutdown .. suspect plans will change quite a bit. I'll be working closely with timebanks.org and blogging on their website.. also hoping to meet up with @postgrowth #StephanieRearick #MutualAidNetwork people and lots of #Timebank #urbanfarms too.
After several years of delays for #covid and caring responsibilities, my #ChurchillTravelFellowship is unexpectedly back on. Coming to #USA in October to visit various #Timebank schemes on #EastCoast and #NewEngland and maybe #Chicago particularly interested in how they help in #rural areas with #CommunityResilience and keeping older people active in communities. Sadly with #ClimateChange and #ExtremeWeather events think #Timebanks may prove remarkably useful for that sort of thing. Would love to connect with people doing things like #RepairCafe #foodwaste #CommunityComposting or other #SharingEconomy type things while I'm out there.
Any #Timebank #Timebanking folk on here? Amongst many other things that I do.. I have a travel fellowship to explore benefits of rural timebanking, especially to support older people to stay connected to their community. Travel plans have been delayed by family illness and covid but I need to complete my travels and report by June 2024. Would love to connect with any #Timebanks on here especially #rural ones.. for the US folk..I know Chris Gray and speaking to her next week
#EcoJustFoodNetwork in #Toronto 👨🌾👩🌾
" #EJFN replaces a typical volunteer structure by #compensating #workers using a #TimeBank model. #CityFolk offer their #labour to #farmers in the #network in return for time credits, which can be #redeemed at #FarmersMarkets to purchase the same quality produce that would go to grocery stores. The credits can also be #exchanged between members of the network for anything from #childcare to #SkillSharing "

The Cashless team have formed a partnership with Exchange Christchurch (XCHC) to create a mobile-friendly app that allows people to make offers and requests of help with their community projects, and issue gratitude credits to reward those who help. The network protocol used is SSB (Scuttlebutt) and all code used in the app will be free, under an MPL license. More details here:

Time is Money
Automated nonbinary cooperative socialism in an All-Crisis environment. Discussion starter.
tl,dr: the introduction of a community currency based on time of work/personal involvement offered for socially useful purposes.
Before TePeWu can operate on the target principle of from each according to their ability, to each according to their need, it must first begin to operate at all.
To start working at all, we need to move from a loose group of people knowing each other online and casually discussing similar topics to a loose group of people knowing each other online and doing things together (albeit remotely) according to a plan leading to the creation of TePeWu as a sustainable and economically viable community.
This cannot (in a practical sense) be done in one giant leap of faith. It takes a bridge over the bubbling toxic magma, the radioactive waste of capitalism, that separates us from freedom.
But how it is going to work practically, without poetry?
In this text, I seek answers to the following questions, raised from the position of someone who "would like to, but is afraid" to get involved in the creation of a TePeWu (or other cooperative community of an economic nature).
-- How can I get involved if my skills are nowhere near what TePeWu needs?
-- I don't want to give money to TePeWu, but I want to help somehow without disrupting my normal life too much.
-- I can do something for TePeWu, but I need to get something in return.
NOTE #1: in this text I deliberately avoid discussing how (in a technical sense) to implement such a mechanism. There are quite a few possibilities, but today let us talk about the principle of operation.
NOTE #2: Wherever I write about #TePeW in this text, please treat it as a "placeholder" -- the same mechanism can be applied to all initiatives "on our side of the street".
Time is money (CTP -- Czas To Pieniądz in Polish)
Let's talk about non-capitalist money, based on labor time.
Each of us has a number of hours per day, per week, per month, etc. Much of it is used up doing what we have to do: survive under capitalism. But there is always some amount of hours left over that we can use as we wish. This is our wealth. By choosing to help this or that person or initiative, we use our wealth to change the world. Our action time is the only real currency in the universe.
How is CTP created?
CTP is created when:
-- person X has done useful work for the community;
-- the community (according to its own rules) has confirmed that the work was needed and done properly;
-- the person responsible for maintaining the record has credited the appropriate number of CTPs to X's account.
Example:
-- the community announces that it needs someone to set up and configure the Yunohost server and basic applications to use Fediversum, and is willing to pay 10 CTP for the job done.
-- X offers to do the work.
-- once the transaction is completed and confirmed by both parties, 10 CTP units appear in X's account.
How do I spend my CTPs?
CTP, like any currency, can be spent wherever it is accepted. Therefore, a very important community support group will be people who declare that they will accept a certain amount of CTP per month for their work.
Example:
-- X, with, say, 10 CTP in their account, approaches Y, who declares that they can clean gardens, assemble computers or translate from English and is willing to accept up to 20 CTP per month for these services.
-- X asks Y to translate 30 pages of text from English and pays 6 CTP for it. Let's call this an P2P (person to person) transaction.
What happens now?
1. the balance in X's account changes from 10 CTP to 4 CTP
2. in account Y the monthly CTP receipt limit changes from 20 CTP to 14 CTP (resets at the beginning of the next month)
3. the registry records the transaction and any comments, according to the rules adopted by the community.
Note that the CTP *disappears* when spent ODO, which prevents inflation and the accumulation of wealth through trading and speculation.
Likewise, ODO's unused CTP intake limit for the month disappears.
How does this relate to supporting the community?
Well, quite simply. You can support #TePeWu (or any community using CTP) in two ways:
1. By announcing that you are willing to do (insert list of work here) per month for, say, 10 CTPs. This is how you make the currency credible (your offered time is to CTP what gold is to bullion currency).
2. By doing useful work for TePeWu (preferably announced on a public list) and collecting CTP for it.
How to prevent fraud?
First and foremost, transparency. Billing and flow information (subject to personal information) should be publicly available. This includes:
-- Announcements of those accepting CTP, with ongoing updates of their quota status.
-- Announcements from the community about what work is needed, and about work done from outside the list -- with CTP prices listed, of course.
-- An anonymized (or at least pseudonymized) record of CTP transactions/flows.
Additionally, the community _could_ introduce a comment system for creating a reputation registry of people, so that the person entering an ODO transaction has a better idea of who they are dealing with.
Questions and comments are very welcome.
