So I have hundreds of videos of ~1 minute recorded from my phone ~10 years ago, and they generally don’t have that great compression, nor they are stored in a modern and advanced video format.
For archiving purposes, I want to take advantage of my workstation’s mighty GPU to process them so that the quality is approximately the same, but the file size would be strongly reduced.
Nevertheless, compressing videos is terribly hard, and way more complex than compressing pictures, so I wouldn’t really know how to do this, what format to use, what codec, what bitrate, what parameters to keep an eye on, etc.
I don’t care if the compression takes a lot of time, I just want smaller but good looking videos.
Any tips? (Links to guides and tutorials are ok too)
Also, unfortunately I am forced to use Windows for this (don’t ask me why 🫠), but I know nothing about Windows because I hate it. Practical software suggestions are very much welcome, too!

I'm making a video codec that uses Color Cell Compression, the predecessor of S3TC. A clip can have 16 colors, and each 4x4-pixel block usea two of them. I aim to play FMV on Mega Drive and Game Boy Advance.
It codes 256x144 pixel 12 fps animation at 25 to 42 kB/s depending on motion. Live action is 62.5 kB/s. Fits Sega CD bitrate, not so much Genesis or GBA cartridge yet. I still see room for byte savings.

What's the video compression mechanism that #Telegram uses? I've been trying to use ffshare* which uses ffmpeg under the hood but it's slow. Sending a message to myself on telegram then downloading it is much faster. Is it client-side or some server-side magic? I'm probably gonna dig into the code** to find it but asking here to see if anyone knows the answer right away.

So I'm now writing the Cinepak decoder for still images embedded in QuickDraw pictures. And it seems I stumbled on a chunkId of 0x1100 which is not something present in either https://multimedia.cx/mirror/cinepak.txt or the ffmpeg source code. The stream seems consistent, i.e. the chunk size matches, so I'm baffled, any ideas?

⚠️ Sometimes the file size restrictions don't come from the Instance but from the App you're using.
A common limit seems to be around 40MB, which is not a lot, especially if your phone films in 4k.
➡️ Thankfully, there are apps that can compress your video on the go.
One such app is "Video Compressor & Video to MP4" ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bdroid.videocompressorandconverter )
1️⃣ Open the app and select "Compress"
2️⃣ Select your video and the compression size. The app shows you an estimated file size.
3️⃣ Press convert and voila! You now have a smaller video ready to post!
🔓 This app is free with ads. Despite the Google Play info, it only asked me to access my local media during my test. Conversion seemed to run locally on my phone, not uploading anything to a cloud service. Please still use it at your own discretion.
