I have had the #DungeonCrawler 'The Quest' on my steam wish list for years. I don't know why, I've just never got around to purchasing it.

I didn't realize that this game started life on the #PocketPC. It is now running on my #WindowsCE #SmartBook at a glorious one frame a second.

While this game looks wonderful, this device is woeful. 😂

The title screen of the game Quest. There's a selection of options in the center of the screen and some eyes at the bottom. There is a smoky colorful haze in the background.I just entered a dungeon. There are mossy stone walls and Roots hanging from the ceiling. There are some stalagmites jutting up from the ground. On a dirt path leading through the woods. There are trees to the left and to the right. There is a giant hollowed out tree at the end of the path.

@Judeau I like WindowsCE as well. I wish it was easier to install software on many of the devices, but that's part of what makes them useful for me. Instant on, get right to Word and start working.

My favorite #WindowsCE device is the Vadem Clio. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vadem_Cl). I have two of these. I used to have a very nice third one, but they're very picky about power and I fried it using a voltage adapter.

@james That's interesting and thanks for the link. I just was more curious than anything.

I'm definitely going to keep this as a Windows CE device. I'm a huge fan of #PocketPC PDAs and #WindowsCE devices.

However, it's always neat to see what other OS's people are able to successfully boot on devices.

I have been looking for a Sylvania #SmartBook for some time & finally got one!

These are such interesting devices. One part 90's H/PC, one part 2000's #PocketPC & thrown into a #NetBook form factor.

It's a strange hybrid device of form and function.

I can't wait to tinker around with this. Since it runs on ARM and #WindowsCE I have heard there are ways to load pocket PC programs on it, though they may be unoptimized.

A black colored Sylvania Smartbook. It is displaying the Windows desktop with wallpaper that reads Windows Embedded Compact 7.

It looks quite similar to Windows '95, 98, or 2000 but isn't.A shot of the black smartbook displaying the system properties screen. It reads that it is running Windows Embedded Compact 7.The front of the Sylvania smartbook box. It has a shot of the black black notebook like device. On the left hand side of the box in an orange colored column it lists the highlights of the device.

Some of the highlights include 512 MB of RAM and 2 GB of flash memory and the fact that it runs Windows CE 7.The back of the smartbook box. It lists the specs of the machine.

The best part is the lower left hand corner where it reads: This product is not a computer. It is a wireless internet device with a Windows embedded operating system. 😎

Most of the articles that I have come across mention the following programs:

SynCE – Allows Linux to communicate with #WindowsMobile and #WindowsCE devices.

Multisync – Manages the synchronization of PIM data like calendars, address, etc. and lets you decide what to sync.

Evolution – Microsoft Outlook compatible program.

There are some other programs that I have seen mentioned but I believe they are for older methods.

This might actually be possible! 👍

Does anyone know how to get a #PocketPC #PDA to mount and sync with #Linux?

Any information that I find is like 15 - 20 years old. It clearly used to be possible.

Simply plugging it in and lsusb in the terminal gives some pleasantly unexpected results even though it's not mounted or accessible for file transfers.

#WindowsMobile #WindowsCE

With the PocketPC plugged into the USB port the terminal actually lists it as: Dell Computer Corp. Axim X51V.

@MrKidney Das hat mich auch gewundert.... Eine Tastatur habe ich zwar, aber die war ja nicht Standard. Und solch Fehler kennt man ja vin #microsoft - das Teil hat #WindowsCE ...

Snapshot of my #ngnix logs:

Not surprising that bots and scrapers make up 90% of my hits and nearly 95% of my data used, nor is it surprising to see Windows is the most-used OS.

But what did surprise me where some of the Windows versions. Sure, #WinXP still has its purpose for legacy software/hardware combos, but who's using #WindowsCE?!

Also, you can't see it in the screenshot, but I also have hits from devices running Android Kitkat and Jellybean. With the IOS side going back to IOS6.

@gnrz

Not me.

But follow the #retrocomputing and #windowsce tags and you will find some.

@pulkomandy I'm pretty confident #Microsoft had longterm licensees with like cancellations mandated 10+ years before coming into effect.

I had been looking for some time for a good PDF reader for my #PocketPC.

I found countless apps archived across websites and all of them gave terrible results. For some reason Adobe Reader version 1 and 2 don't seem to be archived anywhere.

Fortunately, the Wayback Machine allowed me to search their website from 2006 and grab these programs.

As old as they are they still work surprisingly well!
