The first rock garden plantings are starting to show. I've left some of the "local volunteers" to help hold the soil until I find just the right crushed stone mulch, and more plants of course.
Gritty rock garden with large and small boulders forming a slope and scree, backed by a grey parged wall. Purple Siberian irises, yellowish lewisia, and fuschia-pink dianthus are blooming. You can just make out small sedums between some of the rocks.

It's garden planning time in our neck of the woods and I'm working on a planting list for the small rock garden I built last summer. Any suggestions or discussion of suitable plants would be welcome.

So far I have 2 small sedums to move in from a temporary location and an abundance of wild strawberry and creeping thyme all over the place.

The garden is south facing on a slope in full sun, North American climate Zone 4a, min winter temp -30C to -35C. There's a paved path on the south and west sides and a wall of the house on the east. This makes it fairly warm, and thus dry, in spite of the 80 to 100 cm of precipitation (much of that snow) it gets every year.

Edit to clarify: images were taken last summer. More snow today and coming this weekend.

Garden featuring many South African native plants mixed with a few annual wildflowers outside the Mann Lab on the UC Davis campus.

Partly cloudy day in the late afternoon. A mound between concrete paths is planted with Kalanchoe and Aloe plants as well as Gazania and other bedding plants. The Kalanchoe "red hot poker" plants are in blom as is a tall Aloe "tree" with many inflorescences of golden tubular blooms. The Gazanias are closing towards the end of the day so the purple undersides of their petals show.

Collecting Fringed Sage (Artemisia frigida) with Wildlands Restoration Volunteers on a beautiful day: not too hot and not raining. We saw a Northern Harrier skimming just above the bushes and a small group of sandhill cranes circling overhead, probably riding a thermal to gain some altitude before heading further south.

We collect them in plastic bags because the seeds are so tiny they fall through the seams of paper bags. They will be taken back to the office and spread out to air dry. Later, we will have a seed-cleaning party.

@stephanie @Artsandsocks We removed the grass in our front yard 20 years ago and went with a xeriscaped garden. The plant mix has changed over the years as the microclimate in our front garden has changed, but native plants are the way to go.

This is how my #SidewalkStrip looks after four days of 99-103 degrees F. The agastache in the lower right corner is looking stressed, but the garden as a whole is thriving.

A few dozen heat- and drought-tolerant plants, mostly native to Colorado or the region, in the strip between the sidewalk and the street. There is still some bare soil visible, but a lot is mulched with rocks and gravel.

I took some sedum cuttings I had rooted and potted up to the Xeriscape Garden Party, and came home with four little native plants: Coreopsis tinctoria (plains coreopsis), Mentzelia nuda (bractless blazingstar ), Helianthus maximiliani (Maxmillian sunflower), and Thelesperma megapotamicum (Hopi Tea green thread). And a soil moisture meter and a new pair of gardening gloves.

Happy Memorial Day from our back yard. The creeping fig is about 15 months old now and is getting established on the garden wall. I just vacuumed the pool, and the mountains are out in bold relief today.

This #garden was conceived to help expand San Francisco's urban forest and it was designed to be an example of #xeriscaping. It is drought-tolerant and requires no additional #water other than seasonal rain.

#CereusPeruvianusMonstrose #Bloom this morning. Good morning from #Pasadena. 🌞 & 32°c (90°F) but I get the feeling we’ll actually exceed 35°c (95°F) based on the last few days. But it’s quite dry. Time to continue planting #AndyTheTortoise’s new plants including Australian violets which he loves to snack on. Enjoy the weekend!

Honestly, this is one of my favorite pics I’ve taken. Also one of the last with this phone. Hopefully by the end of summer I’ll be able to have a real DSLR to take these. #photography #flowers #hesperaloe #texaswildflower #xeriscaping

Sedum divergens, one of our lesser known native sedums in B.C.

I propagated this from a small cutting of one we found in the yard at the place we rent and I decided to see if it would work as a container plant. Three years in and I think it's a success. Going to take some cuttings and introduce more into the drier parts of our yard.

Felt good to get out in the #raingarden today. Pic on left was when it was planted 2 years ago, right is now. It's filled in beautifully, even if it's not glamorous this time of year. #raingardens #xeriscaping #stormwater
