Not that anybody asked, but my aloe plant made five babies. They all took root and have now been gifted to friends.

There’s something deeply rewarding about caring for plants and sharing the results of that care with others. Will definitely experiment more with propagating other plants.

The other week my neighborhood had its annual Open Garden event, where private citizens open their gardens up to the public and the city puts on a stamp rally (very Japan, much stamp, wow).

The last place I visited was a former tofu maker couple who retired and now grow rare plants. They had a sale event today so I checked it out.

One of the vendors had a bunch of interesting aloes. I chose Aloe antandroi.

My daughter picked out a cute little Euphorbia obesa of all things. Everyone was impressed with her taste.

This culling took a lot of work. Repotted 24 into 20 and separating them so the best survive. Took about 7 hours in 2 days! All are succulents and cactus. About 20 small to medium potted plants for the Southwest. They need half full sun and actually survive in brutal Arizona heat waves. They are all in orange clay pots on the brick paving bricks of the backyard. Many are only 1” tall with 6 or more cactus babies in a shared pot. The aloes are tall and scraggly, planted 2-4 together. The tall blue ceramic pots on top right are placeholder pots waiting for future large plants to come.

These beach boardwalk selfies make it look like the boardwalk was empty, but it wasn’t. There were cyclists & strollers & pooches & park staff, & cops telling that guy at the next bench to turn off his music (he cursed them out to me under his breath as he passed)… So, plenty of good people watching. Coney Island definitely has more open shops than here, I admit.

They ran and danced in their pink tutus. They followed mom, listening dutifully.
Earlier, a pair of young women held a cartwheel contest (six), and a dad helped his daughter try and fly a kite. Add-in a few cute pooches, & the beach & #boardwalk were plenty fun.

Well friends, it is time.
After 10 years, this #aloe plant is so big that moving it was a danger to both the plant and the people moving it (required at least 2 people). It had majorly outgrown it's 18 inch pot and fallen over.
I've chopped it off at the base, trimmed back the leaves, and will attempt rerooting it so it can grow straight again.
Currently hanging in an empty pot with a tarp donut protecting the lower leaves.

A very large aloe plant resting on a circle of twisted up tarp with the stem hanging hidden in a large empty pot. The plant is about 2 feet tall above the pot edge and its leaves fan out in about 4ft diameter. There are a few dozen leaves, most the length of an arm and 3-4 inches wide

The pot the aloe was just cut from. A 2 inch diameter woody stem peelaks out of the dirt with a hand next to it for scale. Surrounding it is an absolute thicket of smaller aloe plants, some fairly large themselves.
