@shlepcar I remember my mom telling me about the kids from #tuleLake playing #football against the kids from #alturas, and I remember having my mouth washed out for using the n-word before I knew what it meant, but I don't remember my mom telling me that the kids from tule lake, some of whom lost their lives fighting in @WorldWarii, were #incarcerated wrongly. And I wish she had.

I think she assumed I would understand, because she hated the #incarceration, but I think that though I understood, i, and the rest of my early 60s late Boomer cohort, would have benefited from having it spelled out.

When I feel #old, it's because I realized that so many of these people have already died and apologies are too late. Making #amends? Too late.

@GottaLaff This is why I'm glad the #Jesuits are running the show. The way #PopeFrancis has promoted #evolution, allowed women who have had an #abortion back into the church, and most importantly, updated the church's criminal code to finally punish #PedophilicPriests is inspirational.

#Catholicism still has a ways to go to make #amends for its crimes in the past, but its #Jesuit leadership's focus on science and #compassion has at least started them down the path toward atonement.

I encourage all in #Aotearoa to watch it, and those outside of Aotearoa can gain many insights into their own places, most of which have experienced #colonisation and injustices at least as grave. I feel I need to acknowledge past injustices and work and, along with all of us of us who benefited, to sacrifice in order to make #amends.
