The image depicts a picturesque view of the cityscape in what appears to be early 19th-century England. The prominent feature is Bath Abbey, which stands majestically on the left side with its distinctive Gothic architecture featuring pointed arches and towers rising above the surrounding buildings. To the right, across the River Avon that meanders through the foreground of the image, lies Pulteney Bridge, an arched structure connecting both sides of the river.

The landscape is lush with greenery; trees line the banks of the river, providing a serene ambiance to the scene. The vegetation appears well-maintained and suggests regular upkeep, indicative of city or town planning during that era. In the distance beyond the Abbey, one can see an assortment of buildings typical of urban development from the period.

The overall coloration is somewhat muted with sepia tones dominating the image, which was common in photographs taken in the late 19th century due to photographic technology limitations at the time. This photograph seems to have been printed on a postcard or similar medium as indicated by its format and size. The text "Bath Abbey" indicates that this scene is specifically of Bath's notable abbey, suggesting it could be used for historical reference or educational purposes.

The setting reflects an era where urban planning was beginning to incorporate more green spaces amidst the burgeoning cities' growth, emphasizi [...]

The image depicts Bath Abbey in England, showcasing its Gothic architecture with tall spires and intricate stonework. The abbey is surrounded by a courtyard with greenery, including trees and shrubs. A large pillar-like structure stands prominently on the left side of the photo. There's an absence of human figures or modern elements within this historical setting, suggesting it was captured in late 19th to early 20th-century times when such photographs were prevalent for documenting landmarks. The sepia tone is typical of photos from that era and adds a vintage feel to the image.

There's 210 or so steps, but you don't go straight up. You start at a little door at one end of the building, which takes you up to the roof. Then you have to talk along the roof. And you also stop in the bell room and get to climb into and look at the bells. So not a particularly hard climb.

This is crossing the roof on the way back down.

A narrow walkway with a sloping black roof on one side and a stone parapet on the other. At the far end of the walkway is a stone tower with carved decorations around its edges and top. In front of it, a man dressed in black is waiting his turn to enter.

And the clock, from within the abbey's tower.

#BathAbbey #Clocks

Some large metal cogs set in a round window-space. In shadow, as they're lit from behind. Behind is the glass of the window, made a number of smaller panes set in a metal frame. The centre is a star made from a number of diamonds, and this is surrounded by rounded squares. In front of this, only just visible, is the clock face, with minute dividers around the edge and Roman numerals.

My plan to base daily photos on the travels of the characters in the novel I'm eating has been derailed. They've given me a good idea for a way to rework an older ms, which I want to try. Unfortunately for photo sharing, it's an otherworld fantasy so no photo sharing. So now I needed a new plan! (Any suggestions?)

In the meantime, here's some photos of the bells in the tower of Bath Abbey (which should be a priory church according to the nice gentleman with whom I was talking about burying earls in cathedrals (long story).)

The bell shown is the biggest (the Tenor). It was remade in the 19th century, after it's predecessor cracked. The inscription is

"All you of Bathe that hear me sound
"Thank Lady Hopton's hundred pound"
I presume she donated the money for the (earlier) bell.

A row of four large wheels, looking like giant cogs, set in a line of thick timber planks/rafters. The walls behind are black, stone I think. A portion on the side shows white mortar between the blocks but overall the mortar is barely indistinguishable from the blocks. There are some vents that are letting in light, but overall the area is dark so the photo is grainy.A really big metal bell. It's a dark metal, maybe bronze (It has the green sheen of old copper alloys.) but looks a dark grey. It's set in a wooden mount and attached to one of the large wheels. The rope is attached to the wheel, which turns the bell to make it ring.

Good morning everyone!

This one is called "Donuts and Coffee By The Abbey".

My eye was drawn to the contrasting elements in this shot: the sharpness of the sign versus the softness of #BathAbbey behind; the brilliant white versus the deep orange glow.

This photo was taken over the heads of a crowded street at Bath Christmas Market.

In the bottom right, there's a very crisp black and white sign that says 'Donuts and Coffee: Hand Made Donuts & Freshly Ground Coffee'. The sign is edged in Christmas decorations, to give it a very festive feel.

In the background rises the walls of Bath Abbey. The walls are lit in a deep orange glow from floodlights that we cannot see. The Abbey is slightly out of focus, providing both a colour and sharpness contrast to the sign itself.
