Snow Headed for Raleigh: What to Expect On Monday December 8th

If you live in the Triangle — or you’ve been keeping an eye on the skies — you might want to get ready: snow is in the forecast for tomorrow in Raleigh, North Carolina. According to the latest outlook from the National Weather Service (NWS), rain is expected to mix with snow in the morning before transitioning to snow later in the day. 

❄️ How Much Snow Could Raleigh See?

Across much of the Triangle — including Raleigh — forecasts point toward about ½ inch of snow.  Areas farther north or closer to the NC/VA border could see up to 2 inches.  Because temperatures may stay near or slightly above freezing for part of the day, accumulation is expected to be light or limited to grassy/elevated surfaces. 

That said — while snow is possible — major accumulation is unlikely in most of Raleigh. Historic weather patterns show that measurable snow often doesn’t amount to much. 

🚗 What This Means for Your Day

The morning commute could feature a rain-snow mix, which may not stick, but might still make for slick roads if temperatures dip.  As the precipitation shifts from rain to snow mid-day and evening, watch out for light accumulations on untreated surfaces like grass, roofs, or cars. With colder air expected later in the evening — and the possibility of flash freeze or black ice — early Tuesday morning could see hazardous patches on roads. 

✅ Tips to Prepare

If you’ll be out tomorrow: drive carefully, especially near dawn or after dark — treat roads like they might be slick. Have a scraper or brush ready: even a dusting of snow or frost can accumulate on car windshields. Keep an eye on weather alerts — what starts as rain could shift to snow quickly. If you live north of I-85 or closer to higher elevations, preparation is more important — you might see a bit more snow than downtown Raleigh.

As always, weather in central North Carolina is unpredictable — what nips at your nose as rain this morning could dust your lawn with flakes by evening. Stay warm out there, and check back with your local weather station if conditions shift.

A love a thick #fog so I really wanted to go walking this morning with the ROA covered, but I realized it was probably a bad idea because there's likely a lot of ice patches from the melted snow that then froze overnight cause it'll still be below freezing for another hour or two before heating up into the mid-40s today.

In 2008, I was a section sergeant during my Army Guard public affairs unit’s deployment to U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay and would entertain the young troops in the section with assorted rock n roll in the 10 passenger 2006 Chevy Express van I was assigned as I drove them to work. AC/DC happened to release an album that year and I picked up a copy of the CD at the NEX on base. They loved me. 😁

We were invited to go to the opening of a new eatery in #Macedon (GoGo’s café), for #breakfast at 6:30 this morning.

I woke throughout the night, checking the temperature as it went down & down.

When the temp hit -3° Celsius I stopped checking. (There’d have been #BlackIce on the roads & my #asthma would go nuts the second I went outside.)

The new plan is we go there for #lunch today instead. 👍
