Modern colourful Lolei pagoda

The original, classic Khmer temple Prasat Lolei was placed on an island in an artificial water basin. It was the royal family temple in Hariharalaya. That was the last capital outside what we now recognise as the core Angkor Archaeological Park area around Angkor Thom north of Siem Reap.

The water is gone, but the four old temple towers are still there. Around the old temple grounds, a modern Buddhist monastery was built and still operating.

A modern Wat and Temple
The monks here were quite interested in talking to visitors, seeking information and some of them loved to practice their English. And some German too, come to that.

This photo is from inside the modern Buddhist temple, which is among the heaviest colourful temples I have seen in the Siem Reap area. But it is also very open to the sun light, making it a place of worship filled with light and colours.

I like religious buildings with this sort of character.

Under a hundred meter away, the 1100 years older holy towers connect the old and new continuous cultural history and heritage of Cambodia.

Sunrise greeting at the first grand temple of the Khmer Empire

Mornings are the most pleasant time to visit Bakong Temple. The large stone temple gets very hot later in the day.
Bakong was the first mountain type of temple architecture design in the Khmer imperial era. It served as a state temple for king Indravarman I, in the first dedicated Khmer imperial capital at Hariharalaya.
Today this is the Roluos Group of temples east of Siem Reap City, Cambodia. Other well-known temples here is Preah Koh and Lolei.

Large Hindu influence
The temple was dedicated to Shiva, and its main consecrated image was a lingam called Sri Indresvara. This step pyramid mountain temple draws inspiration from other large Hindu temples in the region built around the same time. Most notably the fantastic Borobudur temple in Java, outside Yogyakarta.
Bakong temple was the last large construction in Hariharalaya. Indravarman’s son and heir Yasovarman I moved the capital to Phnom Bakheng in the early 900s. Bakheng Hill is just south of what we today call Angkor Thom, the big (capital) city.

For those interested in comparative historical timeline, this temple was finished as a state temple in 881CE. In Norway, the first unification of the kingdom under one superior king established the first larger Nordic kingdom.

To their right, an equal tall temple tower on the same level as the first are in clearly less renovated. Darker areas, worn down details and more hidden reliefs gives the impression of how this must have looked when Bakong temple was rediscovered. It is a sunny morning, with clear blue sky. The reclining lord Buddha

The temple complex Preah Ang Thom is worth a trip to Phnom Kulen/Kulen Mountains in itself. But a large experience within Ang Thom is the 8 meter long statue of a reclining Buddha.

It is the largest in Cambodia and among the 20 largest reclining Buddha-status in Asia. It rests on top of a sandstone formation, and the statue is carved out as part of that sandstone.

Meaning someone saw the Lord Buddha in the stone and carved until he was set free. The classics motivation in art works in any human civilisation.

A holy area
The surrounding Preah Ang Thom temple was built after the Buddha was carved. Getting to this site is easy by car from Siem Reap, and the area carries a lot of other excursion worthy sites.
This includes walking trails for the day trip trekker, a river with a thousand lingam carvings and holy waterfall. The conglomerate of holy sites on the Kulen Mountain was proposed as an official World Cultural Heritage site by Cambodia just when the pandemic started.

An approval of this request seems like a proper next step. This is the national mountains and cradle of Khmer imperial culture after all. Here the first god king of the Khmer Angkor Empire declared the establishment of the Empire in 802 CE, establishing an empire lasting for the next 630 years.

The Compassionate symbolism of the Cat Temple

Prasat Banteay Chhmar original meaning mini citadel temple. In modern Khmer its name can be translated Temple of cats.

A figure frequent in carvings and bas-reliefs here is the Lokeshvara, the compassionate Bodhisattva.

Lokeshvara was given eleven heads to better hear the suffering of humans, and a thousand arms so he could reach out and help all.

The worship of Lokeshvara reached peak during Jayavarman VII.

Photo shows an old carving of a figure with an enormous number of arms and hands, symbolising Lokeshvara, a Boddhisattva targeting helping humanity. Some details are very worn out, like the face, but most of the carvings are still very visible. Around the main figures there are rows of figures praying or bringing offerings to the Lokeshvara. There is a decorated lintel on top. Over the rows of prayers and behind the bodhisattva there are trees, temple and stupa towers.

The Compassionate symbolism of the Cat Temple

The name Prasat Banteay Chhmar original meaning was mini citadel temple. In modern Khmer its name can be translated Temple of cats, as Chhmar means cat.

A figure frequent in carvings and bas-reliefs here is the Lokeshvara, the compassionate Bodhisattva. In Mahayana Buddhism Lokeshvara is the ideal of compassion, as he elected not to reach perfect enlightenment as Buddha. Instead, he decided to help others struggling or suffering on their way to Buddhahood.

Lokeshvara was given eleven heads to better hear the suffering of humans, and a thousand arms so he could reach out and help all of them. He is often depicted with a lotus in one of his left hands.

The great god king Jayavarman VII was Mahayana Buddhist emperor, and the worship of Lokeshvara reached a peak during his reign. Several of the buildings built during his reign uses the Lokeshvara frequently.

Prasat Banteay Chhmar is one of the largest temples built in JVIIs time off the main imperial capital city Angkor Thom. It is famous for having many of the most exquisite versions of Lokeshvara depictions. This Lokeshvara in the photo is one of four depictions on the west side.

This temple is situated far west in today’s Cambodia, along the Angkor Khmer Highway, the main road connecting the main cities in the Khmer Angkor Empire.

Prasat Banteay Chhmar is 3 hours’ drive out of Siem Reap. Suitable for a daytrip, but there are lodgings nearby. Sisophon town is 63 km away. This temple is approximately 20 km east of the Thai border.

The mini citadel temple in Banteay Meanchey

Despite the name, the temple complex of Prasat Banteay Chhmar is one of the largest building works from the time of Jayavarman VII. This newly cleared covered walkway between the entrance building and the first temple to the west of the temple is an example of the building style of the era.

Including the great god kings face covering some of the towers in the central parts. Like what is done in Bayon State Temple in the centre of Angkor Thom.

Banteay Chhmar can be directly translated to “Mini/small fortress”. It is situated in Banteay Meanchey province, meaning The Fortress of Victory. This temple is situated far west in today’s Cambodia, but it is situated along the Angkor Khmer Highway, the main road connecting the main cities in the Khmer Angkor Empire together. This temple was directly connected to Angkor Thom via this highway.

Banteay Chhmar, along with its many satellite shrines and dried out reservoir (Baray), comprises one of the most important and least understood archaeological complexes from Cambodia's Angkor period.

It has been under careful and extensive restoration for the last ten years. This has uncovered buildings in the style of the great kings other buildings. There are some detailed decorated friezes and pilasters, and outer walls with extensive bas-reliefs.

Prasat Banteay Chhmar is 3 hours’ drive out of Siem Reap. Suitable for a daytrip, but there are lodgings nearby. Sisophon town is under one hour away with more lodging’s alternatives and small city offerings of food, drinks and shopping.

Svartisen glacier peeking at the sea past Steintinden mountain

Svartisen, “Black ice” glacier, are the collective name of the second and fourth largest glaciers in mainland Norway.

This is the largest, the West glacier at 201 square kilometres, and close to 1400-meter altitude. It is just short of Steintinden mountain peak at 1534 meter above sea level to the south in this photo.

Svartisen glacier is the second largest in continental Europe. It reaches the lowest point of any glacier in Europe, at 20 metres above sea level at Engabreen subglacier. Most of Svartisen lays at 1000 meter above sea level.

It is an enormous amount of ice and water. The landscape around this glacier is formed by older glaciers grinding and forming the mountain, peaks, valleys and fjords.

The Arctic Circle latitude crosses Svartisen close to this point.

The light from the setting sun gives the landscape a warn hue, contrasting nicely with the cold blue of the sea, the cold white snow and blue sky.

As fun as it gets in a powerful maelstrom

The maelstrom Saltstraumen is one of the strongest tidal currents in the world. It is situated near the city Bodo in Northern Norway, in a beautiful area in a typical coastal landscape for the region.

And as expected, the danger of the rough sea and powerful currents is a challenge to be taken by visitors. Adventurous visitors can enjoy having a wild, wet ride in small boats with powerful engines driving in and out of the whirlpools.

Saltstraumen handles up to 400 million cubic metres of seawater, forcing its way through a 3-kilometre long and 150-metre narrow straight every six hours. Vortices known as whirlpools or maelstroms up to 10 metres in diameter and 5 metres in depth are formed when the current is at its strongest. It is claimed the water moves with a speed of 40 km/h at its strongest.

No wonder the author Jules Verne let the submarine Nautilus disappear in a maelstrom in his fictional book “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea”, released in 1870.

Saltstraumen is one of the scenic spots placed along the national coastal road (Kystriksveien), a scenic 650 km road following the outer coastline of Norway from Bodo to Steinkjer.

Coffee break with a view to nature and culture

It is peaceful, yet with a majestic view to architecture and matching landscape, to have a roadtrip break a couple of hundred meters from the Saltstraumen maelstrom.

The view from the top of the bridge is awesome, and from the parling lots on both sides there is safe access for pedestrians to have a look. It is a look down into the strong currents of the strongest maelstrom in Europe, or a 360-view to sea, mountains, fjords, boat, fishing and peaceful farmlands and homes.

Worth it. But just having a short break with this view is not too bad either.

This spot is where the real roadtrip down the coastal highway of Norway begins. It prepares the traveller for even more splendid sights along the area known as Helgeland and Salten.

A very, very beautiful part of the Norwegian coast.
And that is saying something.

White exceptionalism

White tigers are the result of a natural lack of pigmentation in tigers. It happens with about 1 out of 10 000 kittens.

Even if the tigers born with this are larger by birth and grow bigger faster than their yellow siblings, the lack of camouflage mean they get killed early and are extremely rare in the wild.

This one, on the other hand, looks he seriously considering reducing the amount of whitening in his shampoo.

Royale flare
For centuries, white tigers have been associated with royalty and extreme opulence.

The several hundred white tigers alive are almost all in captivity, often selective bred there. They are still sought after for exhibition, entertainment and trophies with a royal flare.

Fun fact: when white tigers get stressed, they get cross-eyed…

Acceptable captivity
The tigers kept in captivity in the now closed Dusit Zoo were considered well treated, according to animal welfare NGOs.
The tiger enclosures were each comprised of an outside spacious area and a hidden den or night room at the back end of the enclosure.

The animals had a pond or a moat for bathing all filled plentifully. It was plentiful of grass and natural vegetation. Facilities had caves and some platformed areas to climb.

Health conditions of the animals were observed as good. No overcrowding, good body conditions and nonvisible injuries. The cats performed in natural positive behaviours such as scent marking, sniffing, patrolling territory, sleeping and eating were all observed. Tigers appeared relaxed and at ease with surroundings, as it was stated in the report, based on three inspections over five years until Dusit Zoo was closed.

A blonde pose for a white lion

White lions are rare and highly appreciated, often considered divine and royal.

And sometimes you caught them strike a pose like a blonde diva.

These White Lion (Panthera Leo) are not albinos, they are a rare mutation of colour in lions. And it only occurs in one area of the world: In the Kruger-to-canyons Biosphere in Southern Africa. The otherwise tawny prides there carry the gene, and even if the cubs are caught or killed, there will still be white lions being born.

Careless care
Unfortunately, lions in South Africa are no longer considered threatened, meaning the trade in everything lion-related has increased. From trophy hunting to bone-trading for "medicinal" purposes.

This includes trading with white lions, even though they are rare. For a time, they went extinct in the wild but were reintroduced in the hunter free Kruger National Park in 2014.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_lion

In Thailand after the closure of Bangkok Dusit Zoo, there are white lions spread out to seven other zoos as late as 2018.

Passable conditions for big cats in this zoo
The lion enclosures were each comprised of an outside spacious area and a hidden den or night room at the back end of the enclosure.

Health conditions of the animals were observed as good. No overcrowding, good body conditions and nonvisible injuries. By way of mental health, there was no observation of nervous, dissatisfied pacing. Somewhere to run to

At least this one is eager to visit the Reclining Buddha and get the monks blessing.

The entrance stairs to one of the most sacred places on Cambodia’s sacred mountain is often filled with people entering and leaving.

In ancient Khmer, the mountains were named after Indra, the king of gods in the Hinduist realm of Kambuja, or Khmer Angkor Empire as we call it today.

The Kulen Mountains is the mythic origin of the Khmer and Angkor Imperial culture and visiting and view all the sights take several days, or several visits.

But the visits are worth it.

I call it a dancing tree of life

It is a classic shot of one of the main entrances to Ta Prohm Temple, but sometimes cliché becomes iconic.

The Ta Prohm is somehow most known for its tall trees and solid root system entangled in the buildings structure.

But it is also one of the more challenging temples to explore, because the structure itself, the park around it and the entrance gates. The area is so filled with interesting details and unexpected turns and ideas. This is one of the temples worth spending some time studying.

Ta Prohm (Khmer: ប្រាសាទតាព្រហ្ម, "Ancestor Brahma") is the modern name of the structure. Originally it was called Rajavihara (Khmer: រាជវិហារ, "royal monastery"). It was built during the reign of Jayavarman VII, the great ruler who is known for Bayon, the final version of Angkor Thom city and other massive social public works like hospitals and safe guesthouses all over the realm.

It was a monastery and university, build to honour the kings mother, with the gates honouring his brother and his guru. At the peak of its operation, 12 500 people lived within Ta Phrom temple complex and appx 80 000 lived in villages around it, supporting the institution.
