“Islands, Fog” — Two reed-covered wetlands islands in winter tule fog.

At times I like to make photographs that contain as little detail as possible, photographs that might suggest more than they tell. The most distinct feature in this scene is the darker island at the left. Beyond that we see (barely) one more island and then nothing. Any further detail is masked by the thick Central Valley tule fog…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2026/01/28/is

Camp of migrant potato pickers seen from the packing shed. Tulelake, Siskiyou County, California. See general caption number 63-1

The image is a black and white photograph depicting an outdoor scene with numerous makeshift tents or shacks, likely part of a migrant worker camp. There's one prominent truck parked on the left side of what appears to be a dirt road leading through the area. The trucks are older models suggesting this could be historical photo from past decades. No people can be discerned in these structures which indicates it may not capture daily life within but instead an external view, perhaps taken at night or during non-busy hours due to lack of visible activity around them.
The terrain is relatively flat with sparse vegetation and no signs indicating proximity to water sources such as rivers or lakes. The image has a timestamp overlay in the top-left corner which appears to read "8-2305," possibly denoting August 23, 1947 based on standard format for dates at that time period.
In terms of context given by the caption and title provided, this might be part of a larger series documenting conditions faced during wartime or post-war migration periods when agricultural laborers moved in large numbers to harvest crops. The setting could likely correspond with regions known for agriculture such as California's Central Valley which is often associated with potato picking camps like referenced here.
The visual composition seems straightforward without any dramatic angles, focusing on the s [...]

@AndrewHenry California produces nearly 5x the Florida citrus crop. Same story with peaches, CA produces vastly more than Georgia. It’s just marketing that makes people associate produce with other states. Nothing grows well in sand, your food comes from the Central Valley of California

“Wetland Plants” — Slender plants growing in a quiet wetland pond.

This is another “adapt and try something else” photograph from my early December visit to California wetlands — a visit originally intended to focus on migratory birds and tule fog, neither of which turned up in abundance when I arrived. So I looked for alternatives that didn’t require birds and which still worked under a thick, gray overcast. The result was a series of photographs of wetlands plants…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2025/12/17/we
