#cloudsync

If you are like me, then you might have installed the #GoogleAuthenticator app, back in the days when it was the only solution out there for #TOTP #2FA.

But that is long ago. Since then, #Google has closed-sourced it's solution, forced #cloudsync otto it's users and stores these information unencrypted; plus it's suspected to collect even more data from you than needed. And it's a US BigTech company.

I've looked into a couple of alternatives and landed with #Aegis and #EnteAuth which are both excellent #free #opensource choices from #europe. I went with @ente because of it's larger platform support.

So why are you not already using an alternative? It's super easy, and took me less then 10 minutes:
1. On GoogleAuthenticator go to the ☰
2. Select transfer codes
3. Select all the codes you want to transfer --> Google will create a number of QR-Codes, each containing 10 accounts.

On your alternative say import, and scan the Google codes and you're good to go and can let go of yet another proprietary US BigTech dependency (and thus liability).

If you are already using a different #TOTP #2FA app on your smartphone, which one is it, and why?

#MailboxOrg

So recently #OneDrive hd a couple hundred thousand files to sync on my MacBook even though only a very small part of those files was actually on my system. Must've been some metadata stuff or something.

But today I logged into my #Synology #NAS to do a manual backup to an external drive (don't worry, I have automated backups offsite as well) and noticed #CloudSync couldn't sync anymore. Its folder didn't exist. But it did. Relinked OneDrive, and now it's merging files. What's there to merge???

Any #Synology fans out there? If so, I have a question for you all, I currently use Microsoft #OneDrive for #CloudSync in mine, I have less than 1 TB of data, it seems like cost is the same than #BackblazeB2 and #SynologyC2 but I get access to the rest of the office apps that I occasionally need. Am I missing something here?

I *so* very much would like to use #Synology #CloudSync with #ProtonDrive as a destination, rather than "ugly" clouds like #OneDrive

Will this happen @protonprivacy ? Thanks!

TrueNAS Cloud Sync to a service like Backblazes B2 is useless (for me).

I would like to backup my photo archive from home to a remote location. Preferably in such a way that there is one big upload to start off with, and then much smaller incremental uploads when new data is added.

Doing a 3TB upload everyday, and overwriting already uploaded files doesn't make for a good backup practice.

Capture One to Launch iPhone App for Photo Capture and Editing

Over the last two years, Capture One has been working to greatly expand its service to be a better choice for not only professionals but also a wider group of users. With Capture One 22 on the horizon, as well as a new iPad App coming early next year, the company is far from finished and says an iPhone app is coming next.

Capture One's CEO Rafael Orta spoke with PetaPixel at length regarding the recent decisions his company has made as well as what to expect in the coming months. For starters, traditional Capture One users can look forward to HDR and panoramic stitching coming to Capture One 22, which is due out in December.

"It is the culmination of quite a long period of work," Orta says. "Anyone who hasn't touched the most recent version of Capture One would experience a huge step up in terms of speed, efficiency, and capability."

Orta says that the company already has features of Capture One available on the web, such as the Capture Pilot function which was added to allow photographers to share what is being captured during a shoot and avoid what studio photographers call the "monitor huddle" as everyone on set gathers around one display. The company also already made it clear it plans to release an iPad app, which Orta says is currently in the Alpha phase internally but will be available as a beta by very early next year.

Orta says that Capture One's development team was very focused on making sure that these additions remain authentic to the Capture One experience.

"The first question we asked was can we bring our image core, the heart of the image of color quality, to iOS. That was quite a question that is deeply rooted in our DNA," Orta emphasizes. "If we are going to do an app, we have to be uncompromising about our core strengths. And that was what we spent a big chunk of time doing this year, and we successfully ported our image core to iOS to our satisfaction."

Orta says that they believe it is important for photographers to have multiple devices to accomplish different parts of their workflows, and gave the example of a tethered shoot that takes place on a laptop, followed by culling or light colorizing that is done on an iPad, with final edits that could take place on a desktop computer. He says Capture One has been working hard on cloud services that allow them to provide synced access to projects on multiple devices seamlessly.

The next important thing for Capture One was the user interface, which is highly customizable on the desktop and is one of the hallmark features of the app. The company grappled with how to translate its experience to devices that may not necessarily benefit from that kind of customization.

"We recognize the form factor of the iPad is different, so we were able to innovate around how that looks," Orta says. "We wrapped a completely new UI around it which is well suited for using on a tablet. It doesn't allow you to do everything you can do on Capture One for Mac and Windows, and we will be very thoughtful about the tools and editing capabilities that we bring into the tablet because of that."

A Capture One Developer working on an early build of the iPad app.

Orta believes that there is a place for Capture One in the hands of those who aren't necessarily high-end professionals and that they want to also be able to serve those who are "climbing up the ladder" in editing and may eventually want to make the jump to a desktop application.

"We ask ourselves if there is a place for a standalone mobile app. Is it an iPad app or iPhone, or both? But is there a simpler version of Capture One that is uncompromising in our core values like color and fast tethering, but where the UI is fundamentally different?"

A very early glance at the Capture One app for iPad.

As the company refined its iPad experience, Orta said the process brought up logical questions about what was next, and the iPhone immediately became a topic of discussion. To him and his team, it feels like a natural progression.

"We see the amazing optics and sensors and the ability to capture RAW and we think that creates an avenue to have a meaningful app in a smartphone," Orta says. "We are very early in this. We spent most of this year in how to bring the image core to iOS and since we are just at the door of the iPad, we'll start exploring the next logical form factor."

Orta was not able to provide a timeline for when photographers could expect an iPhone app, though given how quickly the company has been able to build out the iPad app for a beta release early in 2022, it should not be much longer of a wait.

Google Overhauls Drive Desktop App, Will Connect it to Google Photos

Google says that since more photos are being made every year, it has decided to roll out a number of new features for Drive for desktop and replace the current Backup and Sync with a unified sync client that connects content from across devices and Google Photos.

As noted by Engadget, Drive for desktop was supplanted by the Backup and Sync app in 2018, but this new version of the desktop application will replace it with a revamped and overhauled version of Drive.

Supposedly, the new application will combine the best parts of Backup and Sync and Drive File Stream and allow users to sync photos and videos across Google Photos as well as Drive.

"Before launching Drive for desktop, we had two sync solutions available: Backup and Sync, which was built primarily for consumer users, and Drive File Stream, which was built for business users," Google's Product Management Lead for Google Drive Scott Limbird says. "Now, we're unifying these sync clients into the new Drive for desktop, bringing people the best and most used features from both Backup and Sync and Drive File Stream."

In addition to allowing any Windows or macOS machine to access content equally, Drive for desktop also automatically syncs local files to the cloud in the background, which Google says will minimize the time needed to wait for files to sync.

The new Drive for desktop will allow users to upload and sync photos and videos to Google Photos and/or Google Drive, sync external storage devices to the cloud (including flash drives and external hard drives), and allow users to Mirror Drive files on your desktop, which stores files on a local device and enables quicker access to content."

Google says that in the coming weeks, Backup and Sync users will begin to see prompts that will ask them to transition to Drive for desktop, which the company is recommending all users do by September of 2021 -- Backup and Sync will stop working on October 1. Drive File Stream users won't have to do much, as Google renamed the app Drive for desktop and it will gain the features from Backup and Sync in the coming months. In short, the changes are happening automatically for those users.
