A thought-provoking talk by Dr. Jobst Heitzig of Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research on building a framework for combining physical processes of the Earth system with human interactions (politics, public opinion, etc.). Objects can be gridded data, groups/communities, or individuals; they can be part of natural systems, human-environment interactions, or cultural constructs. Sometimes several at the same time.

A figure illustrating the copan software approach. Object or Entities are defined by type (individual, community, or located spatial-temporal data. Entity types, process taxa and process types can be freely combined with each other. From Donges et al, 2018.

• THE BRAIN is less like a machine than it is like the murmurations of a flock of starlings or an orchestral symphony (or the Fediverse?)

The brain is an "interactionally complex system where functions emerge from distributed, overlapping networks of regions rather than being localised to specific areas. The interplay of constituent parts generates properties that defy reductive analysis."

New publication on persistent atrial fibrillation and cardioversion outcomes
Can signal complexity help predict early recurrence after electrical cardioversion?

We explored this question using Multi-Scale Entropy (MSE) on ECG signals.

> Birds flock. Locusts swarm. Fish school. From chaotic assemblies of life, order somehow emerges. In this episode, co-host Steven Strogatz interviews the evolutionary ecologist Iain Couzin about how and why collective behaviors arise.

#Neurology isn’t just about isolated disorders—neuroimmunology, neurodegeneration, neurodevelopment, and neuropsychiatry all interact in complex systems influenced by genetics, immunity, environment, and psychosocial factors. 🧬🧠🏘️🌎

Amidst the sun and rain showers so common to this part of the year, we launched our book 'The Atlas of Social Complexity' at the Institute for Advanced Study (University of Amsterdam). Many thanks to all who joined on-site and online, and special very warm thanks to Huub, Edwina, Peter and Joyce at the IAS. #complexity #ComplexityScience

More information about the book here: atlassocialcomplexity.org/

Thanks to Min Cai for the pictures.

Concept cover for the Atlas of Social Complexity, out this spring via Edward Elgar. I very much like the understated looks of it, plus the mysterious artwork by Odilon Redon from 1882. #ComplexNetworks #ComplexityScience #complexity

Does anyone have a tip how to add accounts that someone is following to lists on #Mastodon?

So if someone from a field is following 100 accounts, I want to quickly look through them and add the ones I like to lists. So that I can make a good #complexityscience list for example.

- On the Mastodon web-client I can't see who they're following (if they're on other instances)
- If I go to their instance, I can't use the list feature
- #Tusky acts the same
- #Megalodon's lists feature seems broken

We are suspended in a net, organised by inter-personal / social calculus.

The most recent post of NERVOUSystems begins to frame the archive as a space of choice and negotiation through design and strategy.

To start to to define the archive and avoid an architecture of simplification is the first step to embedding alternative schema.

How do we sort our approach to sorting ‘stuff’ out?
The Archive and its schematic is one space of negotiation.

There are many schemas for archiving.
