I love finding forgotten photos like this in old rolls of film. I guess it’s from somewhere in 2025…

Heat-affected wildlife on a burning planet

"When our animals are heat-stressed, they are also severely compromised, so we see a spike in other issues as well, like vehicle collisions, entanglements and injuries."

Few animals scare full-grown African elephants. -- But bees are among them.

So it was to bees that
#Iain #Douglas-#Hamilton looked when he sought to draw a line between the pachyderms’ domain and humanity’s.

The farmers of Samburu, the Kenyan county where his research was based,
bore elephants no ill will as long as the beasts kept out of their smallholdings.

But the elephants did not know that.

#Bee #fences—hives established at regular intervals on a farm’s perimeter—not only deterred the interlopers, they also yielded a mellifluous profit.

This black and white photograph captures an individual engaged in outdoor activities, likely hanging laundry on a line. The scene is set outdoors with expansive grassy terrain stretching out to the horizon where hills or mountains are faintly visible under a sky suggesting either early morning or late afternoon light conditions.

The person appears focused on their task, standing beside a wire that supports multiple pieces of clothing spread across for drying in what seems like an open-air method. A bowl is situated near them on the ground, hinting at a possible mealtime activity within close proximity to laundry chores.

Branches from above frame part of the upper edge and left side of the image, adding depth and perspective while also emphasizing the rural or semi-rural setting implied by sparse vegetation in the foreground. The dry grass underfoot reinforces this rustic atmosphere as well.

Overall, it's a candid snapshot that tells an engaging story about daily life practices with an emphasis on simplicity and self-sufficiency within what appears to be a non-urban environment.

Gardens. Garden with white picket fence and white house ca. 1920-ca. 1950.

The image depicts a serene garden scene with a white picket fence enclosing the area. Beyond the fence, there is a house visible in the background, partially obscured by trees and foliage. The garden itself features neatly trimmed grass that transitions into vibrant red flowering shrubs arranged in a semi-circle around the central greenery of the lawn.

The color palette suggests it was taken during daylight with ample sunlight illuminating the scene, enhancing the vividness of colors like greens from grass, shrubs, and trees along with contrasting reds from flowers. The overall atmosphere appears peaceful and well-maintained, indicative of a cared-for residential garden space possibly dating back to approximately 1920-50 based on the architecture style observed in the house.

The photo has a vintage quality typical for its time frame, showing signs such as color saturation that might be considered faded or slightly washed out today. The presence of trees and bushes indicates it's likely located within a temperate climate zone where these types of plants can thrive.

Old Palace, Alice Brasser, 2012

idk maybe other people understand this in some other way but for me when folks use weird colors in a natural scene they are describing a kind of altered state of perception, or how they are affected by the place. Or maybe they are telling the truth about a place that seems different to the normal senses, like when Rowdy Roddy Piper puts the sunglasses on in They Live. Or, the palace on the other side of the fence is in a different, fantasy universe. Or maybe they just like using interesting colors, they got bored with the ones The Universe picked. Anyways I really like this, I experience it, I think it's really good. On their website is a lot of good art, they are productive:

we are looking over a fence at a wooded landscape which allows a view on an ornate European palace-type building with columns and a spires. Many of the colors used, and the ways they are painted, are unnatural, but the outlines and contrast of light and dark are in the right places, so you understand clearly what is being rendered, even if the trees have purple and pink in them, along with green and brown, and the palace seems to be glowing with a pink aura, and the stars and clouds in the sky are patterned, wobbling, parallel lines.

Somewhere there are changing attitudes - they are removing barbed wire fencing

" Man removes 18km of barbed wire fencing from Victorian property to save wildlife. According to Entangled Wildlife Australia, 80 per cent of barbed wire entanglements occur on the top strand. Across Australia, there is a growing push to ban the use of barbed wire for property boundaries. Changing attitudes and behaviour are key if we are to create a safer environment for our wildlife."

Shiny new barbed wire fences are going up around the Bellingen and Gleniffer area:

"Barbed wire is a hidden killer of Aussie wildlife. Gliders, bats, owls and wallabies die tangled every year. Researchers have long documented sugar and squirrel gliders caught on barbed wire in roadside vegetation...Replacing barbed wire with plain fencing is a quick win for nature. It’s simple, cheap, lifesaving."
