Trio in the Canopy

Here we have a trio of little brown birds (parvus avis brunnea). With so many tiny birds fluttering about, distinguishing them can be a challenge, though apps like Merlin make identification easier. During winter and early spring, I often spot chipping sparrows, but I don’t believe these birds belong to that group. Instead, I suspect they are field sparrows (Spizella pusill), making them a new addition to my growing collection of bird photos.

If you enjoy photos of birds and other wildlife, take a look at my photo gallery. Sparrows are never overlooked—they're a valued and important part of my collection. Feel free to explore!

"Three delicate field sparrows perch on slender branches, their petite forms blending into the soft, earthy hues of their feathers. Each bird is positioned at a different height, as if caught in a moment of natural choreography, adding a sense of movement to the stillness of the scene. Their tiny beaks and watchful eyes give them an air of quiet alertness. The tree, adorned with vibrant green leaves, serves as a lush backdrop, contrasting beautifully with the birds' muted tones. The background is blurred, as if painted in gentle strokes of color, allowing the sparrows to remain the focal point of the image. The serenity of nature envelops them, creating a peaceful moment frozen in time." - Copilot

Field Sparrow?

I think this is a field sparrow (Spizella pusilla), but I'm not sure. There are a lot of those around, but I haven't knowingly seen one until now, me thinks. Unless I find out different that is what it is. Feel free to chime in iffen you'uz knows what it be. :-)

"The clear, “bouncing-ball” trill of the Field Sparrow is a familiar summer sound in brushy fields and roadsides of the East and Midwest. The singer is a small, warm-toned sparrow with a rusty cap, neat white eye ring, and pink bill. Though still common, Field Sparrows have declined sharply in the last half-century, partly because of the expansion of suburbs, where Field Sparrows will not nest. Populations in the prairies have remained strong thanks in part to measures like the Conservation Reserve Program." - allaboutbirds.org

This image is of a small brownish bird facing the camera, perched on a diagonal branch that rises from right to left. The birds round head faces left revealing a profile of its yellow and gray beak and beady black eye. Its head feathers are light brown. The bird's frontal feathers are fluffy white and are puffed out as if trying to stay warm. Pinkish-brown toes grip the branch and folded brown tail feathers stick straight down. The background is out-of-focus dark green forest.

Personal bird news: The California Bird Records Committee unanimously accepted this March 29 observation of a Field Sparrow, rare enough that they say there are fewer than two occurrences per year in the state. #FieldSparrow #RareBirds #CaliforniaBirdRecordsCommittee #GriffithPark #GriffithParkBirds #RareBirdsOfCalifornia #CBRC

Field Sparrow (Spizella pusilla) at Bryan Farm

One cold windy weekend, I skipped my morning coffee and visited Mercer Meadow at the Reed/Bryan Farm trailhead. I was bundled up but after a few minutes of looking at the European Starlings in the trees at the trailhead, I walked toward the footbridge at the far end.

The Merlin ID app identified several birds nearby which I sighted as well but I was without any photographs are several minutes. The cold started to bite. I had left my gloves in the car. While standing on the footbridge, I [...]

This Neil Armstrong of birds (or perhaps, Avian Amelia Earhart?) crossed the Rocky Mountains solo, the first Field Sparrow to be spotted in California many years, a humble-looking but intrepid half-ounce explorer far from its usual habitat. A single 2-minute sighting in Griffith Park drew birders from near and far trying to see it again, so far to no avail.
