I heard about Discord… really sucks, cuz I'm in a lot of Discord chats, although I mostly use only one channel the most.
Anyways, I run my own IRC server, anyone can visit.
To get started, depending on your OS, I recommend a good IRC client.
On Linux: Konversation for graphical, weechat/irssi for terminal.
On Windows: Hexchat. At least, that's what I used when I last used Windows.
On MacOS: I don't recommend paying for an IRC client, but instead installing Homebrew and using the ones listed for Linux above.
Once you have an irc client, login to the following:
sparktown.xyz, port 6667(if you don't care about TLS) or 6697(If you do).
Be sure to set a nick, and if you need help registering, let me know!
I was going to try to run an XMPP/Jabber server and it initially was going well but then all the options got in the way, lol. I might try again later. Same for Matrix. There's also Signal, Session and Stoat/Revolt chats. Anyways, try out my IRC server if you want, thanks!

I've spent much of my time since Spring 2012 in #IRC. It's where I met some of my most important associates. However, I've largely kept to my own network, CoderNet, since mid-2017.
FWIW: I was involved as a bystander in the self-destruction of #Freenode and I haven't gone back to either of the offshoots since then.
I do spend some time in EdgyNet, the gamedev network that is run by Edgy McEdge aka Stella Valkyrie. I've known Edgy for about 8 years and I try to offer support.
I used to run an active 60-person channel in Freenode. Things change. These days, there is very little random discussion in my network or EdgyNet. However, IRC in general remains the go-to for simple, lightweight, and secure text chat [ provided that secure mode is used ].
In IRC, there is no corporation that believes it owns you, that focuses on selling flashy add-ons, and that relays everything which is said to other corporations and to the government.
The protocol is super-light. High-school students used to revel in making their very own IRC bots. It's also easy to add IRC support to game worlds and to keep an eye on the worlds that way.
One IRC issue is that a bouncer is helpful. Enter "bip". I run a tweaked "bip" setup and it works fine. For people who want a web gateway, I run TheLounge.
The remaining part is the question of the IRC client. For Linux and Windows, there's #HexChat, irssi, and weechat. Or just a web browser if an IRC network includes TheLounge. For Android, there's Revolution IRC. I don't have an iOS device, so I can't comment on that.

There are not that many irc clients, although the Protocol for real-time Internet chat and messaging is extremely popular in the free open software community and there are an infinite number of users and developers on all kinds of topics exchanged in the channels.
What a great and moving moment it was, after which the freenode server was corrupted by the selfishness of one person and the "former" staff not only issued a warning, but also libera.chat was founded! In no time at all, all channels of the free software scene migrated from freenode to Libera.chat, a few, such as kali-linux, migrated to the oftc or others, but then let themselves be represented via channel bots on libera.chat to keep the connection.. And it was kept! And the connections are still in place!
From my point of view, this great movement is the most beautiful example of unity among the free-thinking FOSS, FLOSS, FSF people ever!
Internet Relay Chat protocol is more alive than ever and that's why projects like Hexchat can't die!
The alternatives I can think of would be Weechat and irssi (commandline).
Or ChatZilla in the browser (Seamonkey).. unfortunately, I personally can't think of many more possibilities right now.

@laloica @icaria36 buenas noticias, #irc sigue funcionando y no es dificil acceder. Puedes elegir un cliente y configurarlo o usar en linea sin instalación. Tambien hay apps libres para usarlo.
