In a stunning revelation from 2004, we learn that uninitialized garbage on is dangerous—who would've guessed? 😱 The article then detours into a parade of Microsoft buzzwords, reminding us that tech jargon is the ultimate cure for . 💤

A nice account of how spent far too much time & money with on the doomed 64-bit , only to be beaten by with (with help from ):

A question for chip gurus to explain (ie argue 😁) …

Purely in architectural terms (ie ignore current success / adoption etc) - which is/was the best architecture: #x86 vs #ARM vs #RISCV vs #MIPS vs #SPARC vs #IA64 vs Alpha - and why? What pros/cons of each make the choice?

@wyatt I think amd64 is way better than ix86-64 or ix64

  • Anything is better than #IA64 and #Itanium deserved to be an even bigger failure than it was!

sooo, we are still doubling down on #ia64 #Intel #itanium #t2sde #linux support: instagram.com/p/C7m4BGZNz-D/

Will be streaming my Intel Itanium Software Development Vehicle (SDV) tonight! It’s been awhile since I booted it up so I’ve no idea what OS I’ve got installed on it! Will be live at 5pm PDT on #Twitch! #ia64

A big thank you to Tommy for the donation of this machine to the channel

Today I begin my journey of porting the Illumos kernel to Itanium. I started reading the Solaris 10 internals book for a reference on some aspects of it's design. I hope to also do some work patching some issues and generally contributing to this lovely project.

Just got a server unit!!!!

so, we #undeleted #Intel #IA64 #Itanium support and enabled experimental #GCC LRA-by-default, ... works pretty good for a obsolete, dead and deleted architecture: #t2sde #opensource #Linux youtube.com/watch?v=Db723d9IRY instagram.com/p/C326MCBItU3/

look what #fsf made me do: do we really need to step up maintaining #GCC for #intel #IA64 #Itanium? youtube.com/watch?v=g9YOVFrhoP #opensource #t2sde #Linux

It's wild to me that we keep putrified architectures around in for that long in the first place. And then when we finally remove it people argue for them to be put back in.

I really have a hard time understanding this.

I had one of those ia64 servers at home for about a month which I actually picked up from someone in Berlin just to fscking test copy_thread() changes in 9ba27414f2ec

@leyrer YIKES!

That's really sad for @linux to axe #Itanium that fast...

I guess unless 6.6. is an LTS - Kernel I can't support #IA64 with OS/1337 at all...

#Linux 6.7 Set To Drop Support For #Itanium #IA64
There is also a build fix so at least Linux 6.6, which is expected to be this year's Long Term Support (LTS) kernel release will at least have IA-64 support in good standing should anyone actually use it.

A nearly 2 MByte big patch to remove #Itanium (#IA64) architecture support from the #LinuxKernel is now in #Linux-next and thus (for now) slated for #kernel 6.7:

git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/k

Before it hit that tree, it was discussed on #LKML a week ago:
