The notorious Loggerhead Shrikes (Lanius ludovicianus) aka butcher birds are fascinating creatures. They’re known for their unusual hunting behavior, which includes impaling their prey on thorns or barbed wire—hence the nickname.

A pair of puffed up black American Coots standing under the bright sunlight on a cold morning. One is on the frozen mud, its black head and white bill clear under the sun with a gleaming red eye. The other is standing on the frozen water, its yellow-green lobed feet spread wide over the ice. A clear red eye looks over the white bill.

Perched at the top of a long thick broken branch, weathered grey from the intense desert sun, a bright yellow Western Meadowlark looks off to the left. Its yellow chest and black throat mark are surrounded by the speckled shoulders and topped with the round head tucked low into its neck. The small thin beak is pointed to the left, with a small round eye looking out over it.

The black eyes gleam in the sunlight, a small white dot seemingly the only thing to separate the eye from the surrounding black mask feathers. It is looking straight forward over the sharp beak, seemingly glaring into the camera lens.

Almost hidden amid the tall light tan grass, a dark brown Northern Harrier stands on the ground, its long body hunkered down low to the ground. The round owl like face is scanning the field, dark eye gleaming in the bright sunlight.

Probably the best picture of a Loggerhead Shrike I've taken cause, oddly, it didn't fly away as soon as I stopped.

Butcher Bird’s Rest

I didn't know that I had this photograph. Perhaps I thought it to be a mockingbird when I took the picture. This is a loggerhead shrike (Lanius ludovicianus), the first that I've photographed.

"The Loggerhead Shrike is a songbird with a raptor’s habits. A denizen of grasslands and other open habitats throughout much of North America, this masked black, white, and gray predator hunts from utility poles, fence posts and other conspicuous perches, preying on insects, birds, lizards, and small mammals. Lacking a raptor’s talons, Loggerhead Shrikes skewer their kills on thorns or barbed wire or wedge them into tight places for easy eating. Their numbers have dropped sharply in the last half-century." - allaboutbirds.org

Today's adventure out towards Harmon Reservoir and Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge involved many American Kestrels, several Great Blue Herons, Red-Tailed Hawks, and a Loggerhead Shrike.
