On Sunday, I took my bike and explored some districts in the south of #Magdeburg. In #Westerhüsen, I found some #urbanDecay, but also rural vibes, understated street art, colourful houses, and a lot of nature. This #door caught my eye immediately. I don't know what the #building used to be – maybe a #post office, with the #postBox and yellow details?

Als ich zugeschaut habe mit der #Mailbox war ich noch ein kleiner Junge in einem echten Dorf. Wahrscheinlich war das der einzige Computer in der Zeit in dem Kaff der sich mit einem zweiten verbunden hat ....

Ich selbst hatte das Glück ab 1995 gleich mit 10mbit ins Internet gehen zu können.....

Und heute such ich so alte Rechner wie du sie in Sindelfingen gesehen hast ., ;)

Wer seinen Dienst für Email, Kalender, Adressbuch etc. wechseln möchte, etwa von #google, #microsoft oder auch #apple, dem kann ich nach ein paar Monaten #mailbox dot org nur wärmstens empfehlen. @rikeriki Unsere Familie ist seit Jahren bei #mailbox.org und sehr zufrieden. Die günstigste Version mit 1€/Monat/Account ist völlig ausreichend, wenn man seine Mails lokal archiviert.

So I've given @mailfence a very quick test on their Free tier.

That seems to be quite reasonable alternative for e-mail services. In som parts it's what I would expect @mailbox_org being. Except of one thing: Unencrypted incoming e-mails will not be stored encrypted.

Since I'm on the free tier currently, I've not tested the IMAP integration.

The weakness of #Mailfence and #Mailbox are that the PGP setup requires some efforts to happen. The "settings" panel on Mailfence is cleaner and better organized than mailbox.org, but the latter one is capable of ensuring all received e-mails are stored encrypted - regardless if it was encrypted at arrival or not.

PGP key management is still not as easy as it should be for non-tech users. "It should just happen automatically", is my stance here. It's close to being good, but you need to explicitly enable encryption on each mail you send - unless you reply to an already encrypted mail. This will confuse users and it will result in more unencrypted mails sent than intended.

Neither Mailfence nor mailbox.org will decrypt encrypted Subject fields.

I've briefly tested the WebDAV integration, which seems to work. But WebDAV is not end-to-end-encrypted, so uploaded data will not be stored in so-called "zero access" mode. This means the Mailfence people managing their servers can access and read your data. This will be the same for CalDAV/CardDAV too (calendar and contacts synching)

Mailbox.org recently announced they will upgrade their login system - which is long overdue. Their OTP setup is currently just confusing and very far from user friendly. Here Mailfence is very straight forward.

Both Mailfence and #mailbox_org still got quite a long way to provide a properly privacy enabled service. They're on a good path, but currently far from the capabilities of @protonprivacy, even on the most basic features in e-mail.

Hinter #eclipso scheint nur eine Person zu stehen die auch noch andere Sachen macht. Wäre mir zu heikel. Lieber eine Firma die Mail anbietet und sonst nichts. In D würde ich #posteo.de und #mailbox.org empfehlen.

A USPS mailbox is mounted on a raised island in the middle of a road in front of the post office.

So I've left #fastmail and am now on #tuta. This was a long decision making process and I nearly went with #mailbox.org and #posteo, but for me #tuta fits the bill. I don't need IMAP or SMTP. The tuta app works fine and so does the web interface. I chose tuta because it's does things differently and it's clear that privacy and security are the priority.

Fastmail was and is a perfectly good email provider, they just don't give me the same peace of mind, nor privacy features.

#Mailbox.org oder andere seriöse Anbieter bieten die Möglichkeit, Familien-Konten einzurichten, so dass man Kalender etc. teilen kann (CALDAV).
Oder man richtet sich eine #Nextcloud ein, die man dann auch für andere Dinge wie Fotos etc. nutzt.
