"Sniffing, searching, naming: These actions enable us to more thoughtfully engage with our environment. The more I sniffed at bark, the more confused I became. What did pine even smell like, anyway? It was only when I stepped back that the forest came into view. Iconic and piney, certainly, but also so much more." —Katy Kelleher for Nautilus Magazine
Discord now has olfactory capabilities. I was on it the other day. In addition to the usual notification that goes:
"Several people are typing..."
I also saw the following notification:
"Several people are farting..."

First #calciumimaging of the #honeybee brain during #sleep.
#Machinelearning distinguishes sleep from wakefulness with 93% accuracy in #olfactory network. Clearest difference: the #neuralnetwork state. Nodes are more synchronized during sleep.
A simulation shows reduced inhibitory coupling during sleep, meaning less information processing. Increased inhibition during wakefulness leads to highly distinguishable odour maps. #CIMeC #UniTrento

After a rain is sometimes my favorite time to just sit outside an smell things. Usually a very "earthy" type of smell that I don't smell any other time, like what going into used bookstores used to smell like.

Hi Everyone.
At the beginning of the year I received notice I've got my first funding as a new PI. It's for an ambitious project to look at how the main olfactory system in mice enables individualized social interactions. I wanted to hire a postdoc before, but now I really really want to hire a postdoc. If you know anyone who is at the right stage and might think the picture attached to this post looks cool, please can you share? There's a lot more to it than what's in the diagrams here.
The job ad is in several places including here:

It feels like a million years ago when I was nineteen, and I randomly asked a woman in my ASL class if she went to the dentist that day. (She was emanating 10/10 dentist office aroma (minty bone dust with afternotes of motor burn, fresh paper and isopropyl alcohol. I didn't mention that, I just said something like, "were you at the dentist?" and she lowkey freaked out, all "how could you know that?"
"I can smell it," I replied, in an incorrigibly creepy accent.)

#Ants use a “new” mechanism to regulate gene expression at large tandem arrays of #odorant #receptors. #Neurons “choose” a transcription start site along the array, and then express all downstream genes. To fine-tune receptor expression in the neurons, only RNA from the most upstream expressed gene is exported into the cytoplasm to be translated. This suggests that, despite #coexpression, ant #olfactory neurons ultimately make only one receptor.
