#GraViz is a sizable addition to the #QhoD editions:

GraViz editors Nilab Saeedi and Michael Vogelsberger, and PI Yasir Yılmaz just published the first batch of grand vizierial letters from archives in #Vienna.

qhod.net/context:graviz?locale now includes letters from Sokollu Mehmed Pasha (in office: 1565–1579) in #Ottoman, German and Latin – including modern English translations for better #access.

Enjoy (and report if you spot any mistakes!)

New link tile on the qhod.net start page pointing to the editions of "The Ottoman Grand Vizierate 1560s to 1760s". Image background is split between a latin language and script letter and an Ottoman Turkish arabopersian script letter.

The “Wester moskee” (Wester Mosque) is a large mosque in the “De Baarsjes” area in West. Built in Ottoman style, it has a big dome and minaret. Finished in 2015, it mixes Dutch and Turkish design and is one of the biggest mosques in the Netherlands. 🇳🇱 🇹🇷 🕌

The mosque is linked to Diyanet, a Turkish government group that sends imams abroad. This connection has raised questions about Turkish influence (the long arm of The State). Still, the mosque mainly focuses on prayer, religion, and community, and there’s no sign it supports radical ideas. 🙏

The beautiful interior of the #Yenicami, or New #Mosque, in the #eminonu neighbourhood of #Constantinople, present day #Istanbul, #Turkey. The several #domes and half-domes, typical of #Ottoman religious #architecture (itself of course based on the earlier #Byzantine architecture) make for a very spiritual experience when inside. These guys weren't Catholics, so this is a little off topic, but it's interesting. Three s were arrested and sent to the galleys for dressing as s. The generally accepted view on clothes in the early modern Empire is that sartorial laws were applied inconsistently across time and space (on which see Quataert 1997). I wonder what their story was and what they were up to… Mischief? 4/?

Today, I'm writing about Armenians (real and possibly also unfairly accused) who were sent to the Imperial Shipyard's in 1706 and 1707. This was at a time when anti-Catholic churchmen and the Ottoman central administration were cooperating to tamp down on Catholicism's spread among Ottoman subjects. They were motivated by several different factors. 1/?

"Demandez qu'on vous montre un pont, un hôpital, créé par l'Empire ottoman en Algérie, vous ne le trouverez pas", assure Zemmour sur BFM. Fake news: le pont El Kantara à Constantine a été construit en 1792 par Salah bey... avant d'être détruit en 1857 par les troupes françaises. A Alger, la première structure hospitalière ottomane fut construite en 1550 et continua de fonctionner pour la population jusqu’en 1854 (Hôpital Caratine).

📷 Rose House, Lebanon

The Rose House is a once-grand palace in #Lebanon. Its name echoes the magnificent roses that previously flourished in the now-disused gardens.

The #architecture combines traditional #Ottoman characteristics with more Western influences. The main living area is typical of historic Lebanese buildings, high ceilings and an internal triple-arch arcade leading to a balcony.
