Hey Reddit…

…maybe that’s the sign that you pump too many damn ads.

Because the limit you’ve set (5) is pretty damn low given the sheer endless volume you’ve added over the last 12-18 months, which I suspect is nearly an order of magnitude higher.

And it doesn’t make me want to pay for a subscription, because the enshittification pattern was already set far earlier, so you already abrogated the trust much the same way Youtube has.

When the decline actually begins, I suspect nothing you do will […]

zeruch.wordpress.com/2025/06/2

Remember when you could see your Facebook friends' posts rather than a whole lot of ads?

When Instagram was just about pretty pictures?

When LinkedIn was less about AI-fuelled 'thought leadership' and fake jobs?

These channels are all great examples of "platform decay" (aka "ensh*ittification"), a natural consequence of platform capitalism.

The deterioration of these services follows a distinct, purposeful pattern:

1. Attract users by creating high-quality, free/low-cost services.

2. Make it hard for users to exit (psychologically and physically).

3. Degrade services for private users; favour business customers instead.

4. Degrade services for users and business customers to maximise profits to shareholders. (Source: Wikipedia)

I think we've reached point 4 in most of the above social media channels, don't you?

Thanks Microsoft for just rebooting my computer (#VM in this case), closing my windows and ending my session, without my consent *_*
Not Windows 11, actually. I was feeling pretty good about Windows 10, looking back, but now I'm remembering some things less than fondly.

Donation to the instance seems the thing to do as I disentangle myself from the binfire #Facebook has decided to throw itself onto! Thanks @jaz

Also are people thinking these days about the best way to build out their networks to be resilient to #platformdecay? Any best practices starting to trickle into existence yet?

Just reactivated my little used FB account to share some information.
Now I shall deactivate it again, probably forever

@jenniferplusplus
It's a very silly, juvenile term.
I refuse to use it and instead refer to #PlatformDecay

Excited to be speaking at OggCamp2024 about Internet search in an LLM era, aka ✨ The AI Will Continue Until Morale Improves ✨

T-shirt design featuring the stylised text "The AI will continue until morale improves" with signature AI sparkles in a variety of fonts. The text is superimposed on a background graffiti art image of a person with an orange face, blue hair and a resigned expression. Let's imagine they are a tech worker who has been instructed to find some way to add a large language model to an existing product or service, even it makes no sense or generates unsafe results...

Screenshot of Bing search (using the Edge browser for extra points) for the query "should i eat a small rock every day?" The top result advises that yes, Americans should eat at least a single serving of pebbles, geodes or gravel with breakfast, lunch or dinner. Everything is fine. Go for it, America! We will be watching from a safe distance...

Today in #Enshittification (or #PlatformDecay if you're like me and don't like cussing) news: I know DuckDuckGo's much-touted privacy-friendliness is largely hot air, but I honestly didn't have "DuckDuckGo introduces AI chatbot results" on my July 2024 Bingo card.

Guess I just have to hope Mojeek starts getting good.

"Microsoft is ending support for Windows 10 in October 2025, but the company is now taking the unusual step of reopening its beta program for Windows 10 to test new features and improvements."

Are they just going to start cramming more AI into it to see if they can force people to upgrade?

As all apps lie dying
in digital beds
and Meta's still trying
to get in our heads

While large corporations
expire through greed
and all reparations
are cut down like weed

At least we find comfort
when bots with a fake smile
tweet on without effort
"My nudes in profile"

#ensittification is the word of the day. I don't like it as it isn't transparent in meaning. It refers to the decay of a digital platform over time as supposedly free platform services strive for profit. You'll see more adverts, fees for more than a very basic service, tracking cookies to feed adverts at you, and the sqeezing of money from far less powerful providers, e.g. small traders. So #PlatformDecay is the better term.

Pet peeve for today: #platformDecay of payment services, here's looking at you, #stripe #goCardless #payPal

All began as 'better' ways to do stuff but are now.. not so.

Stripe plugins advertise stripe accounts to payers, begging for personal data.

GoCardless: their orignial USP, a market-shaking fee structure and modern API is now as laughable as google's "don't be evil".

PayPal: well, just ... ugh. yuk. Can anyone even remember when it did something good?

So, NintendoLife.com wants to share tracking data with hundreds (literally; maybe thousands) of partners? Wow... I can't even opt out of a lot of this!
Clear that something's wrong with the way they're doing things.

Makes me think of #Web #platformDecay
