Resize root partition in Debian VM

Hello Linux friends,

Looking for some help today. Some dummy who won’t be named undersized the partition for his Debian VM at 32Gb. This was not enough space, as the VM is already out of storage. In Proxmox where the VM is hosted, I’ve already allocated extra space for this VM using Proxmox’s built in GUI tools. The problem is, I’m not sure how to properly extend the partition within the VM itself, using the terminal only, without breaking everything (something I obviously don’t want to do, lol).

I’ve done a bit of searching and people seem to be recommending tools like fdisk and resize2fs, both of which are not installed, and I’m afraid that I don’t have any available space to install them. I’m also a bit of a noob and some of the language for drives and partitioning just flies over my head.

Any tips on:
- Clearing a bit of space on a Debian VM (that’s mostly using Docker, no other programs/files running constantly)
- Resizing root partitions without too much headache
Would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, and have a beautiful and safe day!

Hello, strangers who might become acquaintances. This is my first post (ツ)
I am a deliberate recluse & prefer the hum of cooling fans and the soft glow of #terminal windows, but one does need to exchange information right? This is my first tentative step into the #Fediverse #Insomnia has me in its grip tonight, so I decided to spin up a small set of #VM installs using #VMware Workstation Pro. I've been sinking hours into the #Switch2 and my #Steam library as escapes from the endless sequence of Sisyphean cycles that make up life. I'm here in search of kindred spirits: people who want to share #music ideas, provide #scripting or #hardware guidance, and obscure interests that most would dismiss as noise.
If you're out there, whether you're a fellow night owl or just someone who appreciates a well-crafted playlist at 3 a.m. maybe drop a line. I'd like to know what keeps you awake. currently playing song:

#ProxLB 1.1.11 for #Proxmox clusters introduces many new features and now fully aligns with Proxmox’s native HA rules.

ProxLB 1.1.11 was released, focusing on deeper integration and smarter balancing for Proxmox VE clusters. This version introduces a beta integration with Proxmox’s native HA and affinity/anti-affinity rules (please report any kind of bugs!), allowing ProxLB to work seamlessly with existing placement constraints instead of duplicating them.

The balancing behavior has also been improved: operators can now prefer smaller or larger VMs during placement, and node memory reservations are respected to reduce overcommitment.

Overall, 1.1.11 makes ProxLB more predictable, safer, and better suited for production use, while paving the way for future HA-aware scheduling improvements.

I deem git servers(gitlab, gitea, forgejo) as a high storage application, which means I either use s3 storage to store stuff on the nas or run it directly on the nas. Now the issue is that they don't support full s3, so most of the data still stays locally, and on the nas, it has some stupid permission issue with the container user and group id.

Does anyone know if this would work: building a mega beefy pc running Linux, and use it for gaming (including ), but also use it for work running a VM to run Windows?

(I need Windows for work, unfortunately, as I use Excel for massive financial model building.)

I'm thinking a 64gb machine could handle it in theory, perhaps at the same time? 👀, but before I try it has anyone got this setup going? If so what ?

I am powering up my self-assembled NAS for the first time and, of course, it is not working. I am panicking because I cannot return any of the components I am using… 🤯

The absolute first time I powered it up, it stayed on but the HDMI did not output anything, so I brutally unplugged the power (I am starting to regret I did this), and connected a USB with a Proxmox image on it.

Now, every time I plug in the power supply, the NAS powers for one second, than shuts off for two seconds, then it tries to boot again… It goes like this on and on and on…

Any tips to troubleshoot this?

Here are the components I am using:

  • Case: Jonsbo N3
  • 6× SATA 6 cables
  • PSU: Chieftec CSN-450C 450W SFX 80 Plus Gold
  • Topton N18 + Intel N150
  • 2× RAM 16GB DDR5
  • 2× HDD Seagate Ironwolf NAS 10TB
  • UPS: BlueWalker Power Basic VI 1000 STL
