The massive landslide and lateral blast took everyone by surprise, exposing that evacuation areas were drawn too small. 54 of 57 fatalities that day were people outside the "red zone". pbs.org/newshour/show/what-sci #MountStHelens #MSH45 #volcano #geology #PNW #history #TDIH

21 years ago, May 18, 2004: a day after the first successful amateur rocket launch to space, Stratofox, a #HamRadio team led by me, recovered the nose cone of the rocket with the avionics 18 miles from the launch pad at Nevada's Black Rock Desert. The rocket's builders used the data on board to confirm the altitude it reached was above 100km needed to claim a space flight. Photo from my camera (taken by Jerry Larson for me) of where we recovered it. #rocketry #NewSpace #space #history #TDIH

45 years ago, May 18, 1980: the big eruption of Mt St Helens. It started with the biggest landslide in recorded history as the northeast side of the mountain slid away. That uncorked the gas-pressurized magma inside the mountain that exploded without the weight holding it down. An 8 hour eruption killed 57, flattened forests and sent mudflows downstream. Volcanologists learned a lot from it. USGS article about the eruption: usgs.gov/volcanoes/mount-st.-h #MSH45 #volcano #geology #PNW #history #TDIH

21 years ago... May 17, 2004, 11:12AM at Black Rock Desert, Nevada, the Civilian Space eXploration Team (CSXT) launched the first successful amateur (all-volunteer) space rocket. It reached an altitude of 72 miles/115 km, exceeding the 100km required to claim a space flight. I was there and took this picture of the launch. I led #HamRadio search crews who located and recovered the rocket: nose/avionics May 18, booster Nov 26. commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fil #rocketry #NewSpace #space #history #TDIH

Wikipedia caption as presented (I am the photographer and uploaded it to Wikipedia):

Description The "CSXT Space Shot 2004" by the Civilian Space eXploration Team (CSXT) was the first amateur rocket launch to space. The rocket launched at 11:12AM US Pacific Time on May 17, 2004 at the Black Rock Desert in northwestern Nevada. (An amateur rocket means everyone working on it did so as a volunteer.) The rocket reached an altitude of 72 miles (115 km), the first amateur rocket to exceed the Karman Line of 62.1 miles (100 km) required to claim a space flight.
