Dear #linuxsupport community, a while ago, the hard drive (NVME) on my #xps 139 380 crashed. I bought a new one and replaced it. I managed to install debian stable (12) on it after changing to legacy boot mode. However, I am now not able to boot to the new system. I have tried both legacy mode and UEFI secure (and insecure) boot mode with AHCI mode without success, the BIOS should be updated. Why am I failing?

I am doing the data recovery on this now.

Laptop had Bitlocker enabled. I had to talk the laptop owner through how to access the Bitlocker key in his Microsoft account.

Thankfully the recovery key worked to unlock it. Turning Bitlocker off now.

The screen was damaged on this XPS laptop. I just have the internal screen cable unplugged and am using a Dell Thunderbolt dock to view with an external screen.

This Dell XPS only has USB-C form factor Thunderbolt ports, no regular USB ports or even an HDMI.

Today I will be attempting a data recovery from a Dell XPS laptop that was dropped and no longer has proper display output to the laptop screen.

To anyone thinking about getting an Dell XPS, I recommend that you don't. The extra cost premium is not worth what you actually get as I think Dell makes a lot of poor design decisions with the XPS line that look "premium" but are really problematic.

That's my opinion on the XPS series. The Latitude line is much more reliable, if you want to go with a laptop from Dell.

So, einmal durch die #XPS Device Capabilities gewühlt. Interessant, was da alles drin steckt. Auch interessant, was alles nicht dabei ist. Da steckt eine halbe Druckvorstufe drin, aber sowas triviales wie Anzahl und Lage der Löcher kann man am Finisher nicht einstellen.
Jetzt hab ich erstmal eine Tabelle aller Features und Optionen. Morgen machen wir mal ein Konfigurationsmodell für Drucker da draus. Nerdbusiness. 🤓

I have to spec a laptop for an incoming employee and so I'm once again pissed that #Dell butchered their #XPS lineup so badly that I can't make it my easy default for a high-end professional dev machine.

What are folks going with these days? Typically looking at 32 GB RAM, Core i9, 1TB storage, decent 15" display, discrete graphics (or similar makeup)

@SilentForest @kuketzblog Ich würde das #XPS aber nicht nochmal nehmen, mag sein dass ich alt bin aber die "alten" Thinkpads wie T490S sind gut ausgestattet, kompatibel mit allem, reparierbar und für das Tagesgeschäft mMn absolut ausreichend. Sehr gute Erfahrungen mit Gebrauchten von luxnote.de gemacht. Klasse Qualität, auf Wunsch mit 3 Jahren Garantie, robust.

* Mon dell #XPS 13 (#Fedora) a 10 ans.
* Ma tablette BQ 10 (#Ubuntu) en a 9.

A un moment va falloir les remplacer.

Et je vais plutôt opté pour un 2-en-1, toujours sous #linux, pour remplacer les 2.

followup to this #XPS 13 issue: user error!

I installed an M2 2280 #nvme disk in an M2 2280 #SATA slot. what was especially perplexing was it was usable post-boot just fine? could install operating systems, read, write, etc

replaced with the correct drive type and now it boots fine #solved

Question for the fediverse #AskFedi on following #hashtags I am interested in X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy XPS for short. But if I follow #xps I get lots of things relates in the computer with the same name. If I use #X-rayPhotoelectronSpectroscopy I get nothing would you then give up and start your own or is there a way to follow only a combo like show me toots that have #xps & #science on the same toot not toots that have #Science & #xps

this older #dell #xps 13 is absolutely stumping me

can boot to #uefi USB devices and install operating systems to disk no problem

cannot get it to ever boot from said disk, secure boot on or off, legacy boot on or off, nada. just endless "no bootable devices found." frustration grr.
