Rain? Or virga? September 2004

Rain falling from dark clouds over mountains. But is it reaching the ground? Scenic photo in Rocky Mountain National Park, looking west from Trail Ridge Road over Forest Canyon toward the Never Summer Range. Dark gray clouds above a shadowed mountain ridge at left, with streaks of rain falling that may or may not be reaching the ground. The right half of the image is sunlit valley with a range of mountains in the background, bright white clouds above. The air is typically very dry and rain often falls but doesn’t reach the ground. It’s called virga. Not to be confused with verga, which means penis in Spanish. September 2004.

We just got back from our "waterfest," backpacking in the White Mountains, New Hampshire! Hiked up two rivers, crossing many small tributaries. Camped near one of the streams, having meals by it and falling asleep listening to the sounds of rushing water. And, the new tent held up against the rain at night! Had a great time! #hiking #backpacking #mountains

Photo looking upstream of a river that has a mountain peak off in the distance. Water is rushing around large gray boulders in the river and green trees line the banks on each side.

Franconia Brook as viewed from footbridge that connects Lincoln Woods Trail and Franconia Brook Trail.Photo of hiker walking across a small stream. The hiker's pants are rolled up so as not to get wet. The hiker has a white backpack on her back and a trekking pole in each hand, which are used for balance while crossing the stream. A large tree that had fallen across the stream is in the foreground. Green trees line the bank of the stream.

Hellgate Brook at intersection with Franconia Brook Trail. This is Lori who I hiked with on this trip.Photo of waterfall in green forested area. The water is flowing over and between large rock slabs. Some of the gray slabs of rock are in the foreground.

Franconia Falls. We saw these falls on a side trip on our return from the campsite.Photo of tent in green forested area. The tent is located on a flat section of ground that is covered with leaves. Trees are immediately behind the tent. The tent has gray material (rain fly) over an orange base (the orange seen is the bathtub floor at base of netted inner tent).

Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL3 Long tent with ground tarp underneath. With no wind, only four stakes are used-- one each for the two vestibules shown on left/right sides, and one each on the other sides to stretch the rain fly over the inner tent (one is shown in the foreground).

Pretty sure that is a false bugbane (Trautvetteria caroliniensis) but anyway I thought it was a pretty flower to share with you.

A white flower on a long stalk. The flower does not have petals. The background is green and blurry due to the short depth of field.
