Another week, another call for #volunteering in the northern #Chicago region for an #endof10 event in #Evanston in November. We're in need of folks who would be interested in helping plan, coordinate, and execute an installation and migration event here in Evanston. All we need is a willingness to learn and some basic #computer skills for installing a #linux operating system, which will be determined by us volunteers.

Shoot me a DM if interested.

I've started working with Beyond Waste #Evanston to get an #endof10 event setup for early next year with an event planned for November as a trial run. Right now it's just me, but I'm looking for folks who would be happy to assist others with migrating to #FOSS alternatives in the northern #Chicago or north shore area. The plan is to have a meeting next month on how we want to put this into action. Send me a DM if you're interested.

@jawarajabbi @benroyce The thing about Vance though- he doesn't have an iron grip on the Republican party like Trump used to. I don't think he has the gravitas to pull off another stunt like the reconciliation package.

I attended a special city council meeting last night and one of my advocate colleagues asked ChatGPT how many members it took to form a quorum.

It was wrong.

I get it, finding, interpreting, and using information/data is hard, but the "AI" won't fix it, it's just going to confidently lie to you. If you're in a room with someone who knows better and where to look, you're going to have egg on your face if you rely on it.

Support for Windows 10 ends on October 14, 2025. Microsoft wants you to buy a new computer. But what if you make your existing one fast and secure again?

If you bought your computer after 2010, there's likely no reason to throw it out. By installing an up-to-date Linux operating system, you can keep using it for years to come!

Installing an operating system may sound hard, but you don't have to do it alone. There may be some people in your area who have volunteers to help! Scan the QR code or visit the URL above to find someone to help upgrade your system to Linux.

Five Reasons To Upgrade To Linux:
1. No New Hardware or License Costs
2. Enhanced Privacy
3. Good for the Planet
4. Community and Pro Support
5. Better User Control

I have a perfectly good #Framework #laptop but found myself with an extra laptop I obtained through a training program. I ended up trading it with my brother for his old #ThinkPad T540p that I had originally bought him for college that won't upgrade to Windows 11 due to the 4th gen Core series chip.

It needs some love (new keyboard, battery) but overall still surprisingly usable. Here's to another laptop being saved from #ewaste

We’re expanding our partnership with HP by launching full support for the HP EliteBook 840 and 845 series G7, G8, and G9, and the 840 Aero G8.

That means free guides, genuine parts, and quality tools for common repairs, such as battery and SSD replacements.

Underneath that it says "Replace your: Battery, Screen, SSD, and much more!" with blue accent lines around it. Disregard, I'm an idiot. I looked at the ppd.conf file at /etc/tuned/ and it's already set to detect when it's on battery and use the "Balanced-Battery" profile. :P

Omonarc :verified:the9thdude@mstdn.social
2025-04-24

@0rzech It's my understanding that it's a default profile included with TuneD, but Fedora doesn't automatically apply it for laptops. If you're on a desktop, there is a "Desktop" profile that might be worth a look.

Omonarc :verified:the9thdude@mstdn.social
2025-04-24

@0rzech I wouldn't call it "necessary" but it really does help with being on battery. Of course, if you aren't having any problems/don't mind your current battery performance, I wouldn't worry about it.

2025-04-24

@wes Absolutely, my laptop (Framework Laptop 16) will still boost on battery, but not to the extent where it's ignoring it's on battery unless it's an extended workload. When I plug in, it behaves the same as if it were on regular balanced mode.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but #Fedora #protip : if you have Fedora installed on a #laptop , change your TuneD profile to "Balanced Battery" via the terminal. Just be sure to go into your DE's power settings to turn off automatic power saver as that will overwrite the power profile and will need to be manually invoked again.

I boosted several posts about this already, but since people keep asking if I've seen it....

MITRE has announced that its funding for the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) program and related programs, including the Common Weakness Enumeration Program, will expire on April 16. The CVE database is critical for anyone doing vulnerability management or security research, and for a whole lot of other uses. There isn't really anyone else left who does this, and it's typically been work that is paid for and supported by the US government, which is a major consumer of this information, btw.

I reached out to MITRE, and they confirmed it is for real. Here is the contract, which is through the Department of Homeland Security, and has been renewed annually on the 16th or 17th of April.

usaspending.gov/award/CONT_AWD

MITRE's CVE database is likely going offline tomorrow. They have told me that for now, historical CVE records will be available at GitHub, github.com/CVEProject

Yosry Barsoum, vice president and director at MITRE's Center for Securing the Homeland, said:

ā€œOn Wednesday, April 16, 2025, funding for MITRE to develop, operate, and modernize the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEĀ®) Program and related programs, such as the Common Weakness Enumeration (CWEā„¢) Program, will expire. The government continues to make considerable efforts to support MITRE’s role in the program and MITRE remains committed to CVE as a global resource.ā€

MITRE | SOLVING PROBLEMS
FOR A SAFER WORLD"
April 15, 2025
Dear CVE Board Member,
We want to make you aware of an important potential issue with MITRE’s enduring
support to CVE.
On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, the current contracting pathway for MITRE to develop,
operate, and modernize CVE and several other related programs, such as CWE, wil
expire. The government continues to make considerable efforts to continue MITRE’
role in support of the program
If a break in service were to occur, we anticipate multiple impacts to CVE, including
deterioration of national vulnerability databases and advisories, tool vendors, incident
response operations, and all manner of critical infrastructure.
MITRE continues to be committed to CVE as a global resource. We thank you as a
member of the CVE Board for your continued partnership.
Sincerely,
Yosry Barsoum
