The Saturday Run

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Recently I have been hiking so regularly, and on such long hikes that I rest during the week. Two weeks ago I hiked a lot and we had Vision Du Réel so I didn't run or cycle much.

This morning I could have gone for a group run with people in Geneva but it felt like a big effort to see just four people. It's not that I didn't want to go, but rather that I didn't want to drive or travel to Geneva twice in one day. If there are no hiking plans then I might join that group next week.

Last week I was properly tired between tree fever, the documentary film festival, and physical hikes. This week I had time to recharge which is why I ran today. According to Apple this was my fastest 5km run yet. I felt a little faster than usual but I didn't feel that I was making such a huge effort.

It's the fist time that Garmin told me that I was in prime form. In a normal week I usually walk, run, and cycle so my body is always recovering during my walking routes.

If I had no evening plans then I might have gone to Estraver to walk, but because I have plans tonight, for once, I chose not to go by train. The train would have cost 28 CHF.

I am far more tempted by the Slow up at the Lac de Morat on the 27th of April, from 10:00 - 17:00. Last year I wanted to go but couldn't. This year I can, and probably will go. Slow Ups are a pleasant experience. Roads are closed to traffic so you can cycle, rollerblade, scoot or do other self-powered sports. E-bikes are included. There is one issue. I noticed the travel time to get there is two hours by train, just one by car.

And Finally, it was nice to go for a morning run, for a change. No trains, no buses, no having to get up at a specific time. If I had gone to Geneva for that run I would have seen four people. Next week might be back to normal.

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Today I drove to Geneva, with the intention of going to a coworking event. In the end I skipped it. Usually when I plan to participate in something like this I go at the start time, rather than at some point during the day. I broke with my routine so I was at the right place, at the right time, and I saw the group. I didn't say hello.

Luckily this is something I rarely do. Usually when I go to an event, I don't skip it.

Having said this I went to an event on Tuesday and my mind wasn't in it, so it was a waste of time.

I had every intention of going. I went shopping, and as soon as that was taken care of I drove to Geneva. Usually I would have prepared my coffee, but I didn't. I expected to have one at the location in Geneva. If I had gone in I would have written a blog post this morning. I would have met new people and I could have found new opportunities.

By chickening out I missed a potential opportunity.

We can flip it around. For the first time in ages I went to Geneva. For the first time in ages I actually planned to do something in the city. Although I didn't complete the entire task I made progress. Next time I will go through with the entire plan.

I suspect that if the café had been quiet I would have felt differently. It's because it seemed to be having a rush of people that my desire to go in, and stick around declined. That's why going an hour earlier would have helped. That's why in future I should.

There is one other thing. I didn't know which laptop to take. The Mac Book Pro I normally use seemed to be dead. The other one seemed fine, although the battery was flat, and two other laptops are small enough, but one has an English keyboard and the other is a machine I rarely use. I need to become more mobile. My main laptop works fine, but it's heavy, especially if I walk to catch the train to Geneva.

I can work on that over the next three or four days.

Solidarity to the struggle of the Nepalese Teachers’ movement
wftucentral.org/solidarity-to-
Government school thousands of teachers in Nepal have been gathering in the capital Kathmandu for the past 7 days and are protesting. This is joint movement of Teachers under the banner of confederation of Nepalese Teachers (CNT). The main demand of the teachers movement is to pressure the government to enact a School Education Act that secures the teacher job security , ensures growth, development, promotion, minimum wages, ensures social security, and ensures trade union rights. Today, the protest have been joined by of all teachers and received international solidarity.   Speech by Premal Kumar Khanal (CONEP Nepal), and WFTU Presidential Council Member: Dear Teachers and Friends, On behalf of the Confederation Nepalese Professional -CONEP Nepal and the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), I express my heartfelt solidarity with your legitimate and just movement. We must internalize the basic mantra of Unity is strength, United we Stand, divided we loose, Fall. And I am confident that all teachers will achieve success if we move forward unitedly. The teachers’ movement has a glorious history. From 1980 to 1995 when the teachers’ movement came, pensions, gratuities, medical facilities, transfers, promotions, etc. were arranged for teachers. But again, the government did not work according to its promise. It produced 17 types of teachers. Instead of determining permanent posts and making permanent appointments, it divided teachers into relief, contract, grant quota, child teachers, etc. Since 1994/1995 no advertisement was published to fill permanent posts for almost 15 years. The government did not pay attention to investing enough for the physical improvement of the university. The government should invest 15/20 percent of the total budget to improve the current education system. But the government has not paid attention. In the midst of success, the Teachers Union / Federation drew the attention of the government to the educational problem. But the government continued to carry the Education Act of 1972 Meanwhile, labor exploitation among teachers increased. It produced two types of teachers. It produced two types of teachers, those who receive pensions, gratuities and those who do not, those who are eligible for transfers and promotions and those who do not. The government kept retreating from providing teachers with skills and development training in line with changing knowledge and technology. As a result, the quality of education also declined. Taking the dire situation in the education sector seriously, the government has reached agreements with you twice after you staged a massive protest last year. The outcome of the agreement is the Education Act for a people-oriented quality education system. It has been 19 months since the bill was presented in the parliament. There have been 3 sessions of parliament. But since the government did not take it seriously, you are now in a decisive movement. Dear teacher friends, Your demands are legitimate, This movement is to bring about radical reforms and changes in education and to protect the rights and interests of teaching staff. This is a movement for truth. It is a movement to get fair wages for labor. Your movement has received support and solidarity not only nationally but also internationally. The World Federation of Teachers (FISE) has expressed support and solidarity with the demands and movement through its 20th World Teachers’ Conference and has drawn the attention of the Nepal government to fulfill the demands as soon as possible. The government has still adopted neoliberal economic policies and programs. The constitution says that education should be made easily available and free to all. This is the current contradiction. The educational mafia is trying to commercialize education. Now the solution to this is only possible through the socialist education system. Therefore, the government should now invest 15/20 percent of the amount of total budget every year. Similarly, the government should finalize the issues agreed upon with the teachers and call a special session of the parliament and issue an act. And, the government should reach an agreement with the political parties regarding the right to education mentioned in the constitution and amend the constitution through the parliament. Finally, I wish you complete success in your movement. 8 th April, 2025
