Scientists Alarmed as #Whales Suddenly Going Silent

"Researchers are alarmed after noticing a significant drop in the number of vocalizations from #BlueWhales.

"As National Geographic reports, scientists used specialized underwater hydrophones, meaning the aquatic version of microphones, to record and trace the sounds of marine life, allowing them to analyze the impact human activity is having on various species.

"However, as detailed in a study published in the journal PLOS One, devastating heat waves have triggered worrying changes over the past decade, allowing #ToxicAlgae to bloom and undermine food sources for whales.

" 'It caused the most widespread poisoning of marine mammals ever documented,' coauthor and Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute biological oceanographer John Ryan told NatGeo. 'These were hard times for whales.'

"As a result, blue whale vocalizations dropped by almost 40 percent, according to the study, with populations of #krill and #anchovy collapsing.

" 'When you really break it down, itโ€™s like trying to sing while you're starving,' Ryan explained. 'They were spending all their time just trying to find food.' "

One of the best things I ate in Italy was this simple pasta, which is just spaghetti with anchovy oil, mussels, parsley, and garlic. It started a now 7 year long obsession with anchovy oil, which I maintain is one of the most delicious things ever invented.

More #weird #peanut #snacks! I so enjoyed the roasted peanut, #pea, and #anchovy #hatchling thing from earlier I decided to explore some variants. This is a pair of such variants: #spicy peanut with #dried anchovy hatchlings (no peas) and spicy peanut with dried #shrimp hatchlings.

Both of them are good. Neither of them taste particularly fishy. The shrimp one has a sweeter overall flavour. On the down side, the anchovy one used larger hatchlings than my previous ones and as a result they're a bit more prone to poking with sharp bits in my mouth. You have to be a bit more careful eating it.

Of potential interest here is the different approach China uses in "best before"-style labelling.  In the west it is traditional to print the date that the product should be used before.  In China you print the production date and the shelf life.  This has caused an international incident in the past when aid goods from China were arm-flapped as being "expired foods and medicines" because the date printed on them had long since passed and nobody could read the Chinese labelling that had the shelf life.  (And we all know that the Chinese are genetically evil and would send aid abroad that will kill people, right?
