Some mornings reward patience.

During a quiet walk across the Regte Heide near Goirle/Tilburg in the Netherlands, close to the ancient burial mounds that have watched over this landscape for thousands of years, I settled down near a patch of blackberry brambles. The sun was behind me and I sat quietly in the shade, listening rather than searching.

Birdsong filled the heathland. Geese called overhead, herons moved in the distance, and the usual chorus of finches and tits surrounded the morning. Yet two songs stood outβ€”ones I couldn’t quite place. So I opened the Merlin bird app. Two names appeared: Yellowhammer – Emberiza citrinella (Geelgors) and European Stonechat – Saxicola rubicola (Roodborsttapuit).

Now I had to wait.

Nearly an hour passed before the first flash of yellow appeared deep inside the thorny brambles: the Yellowhammer, perched low and partially hidden. Beautiful, but difficult to photograph through the maze of branches.

Then, suddenly, a small shape landed just above it.

The European Stonechat (Saxicola rubicola), perfectly visible and briefly posing as the centerpiece of the scene, while the Yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella) remained tucked in the lower right of the bush. Two species, sharing the same patch of bramble for a brief moment.

Moments like this remind me that wildlife photography often rewards stillness more than movement.

Captured handheld with my Canon 5D Mark IV and Sigma 100–400mm, fully zoomed at f/6.4, 1/1000 sec, ISO 500.

The brambles (π˜™π˜Άπ˜£π˜Άπ˜΄ sp.) on the Wiley Trails may be done berrying for the year, but they're displaying some gorgeous autumn colors:

Amidst the green leaves grows a wild raspberry plant changing colors for the autumn. Its leaves are a lovely rosy pink save for the pale yellowish green outlining there veins, and the prickly stems are a jammy purplish red.Closeup of some rosy pink leaves with yellowish green veins growing on a slender red stem.

This is not a post on baking. It is a post on gardening. And I am looking for advice from gardeners who grow bramble fruit.

I have had blackberry plants (Rubus 'Illini hardy') along the garage for close to 20 years. During the first dozen years, each plant sent up multiple canes each year, and the fruit yield the following year was enough for several pies.

But in recent years, the plants (which began as three and now are five) have been sending up only one or two canes each year, and this year's yield was only enough for half of the pie recipe. I had to purchase blackberries to get to the full 4 c (1 L) needed to bake this pie.

I am aware that part of the problem is tree growth that has increased the shade by the garage. I have done some pruning to improve the amount of sunlight, but I was wondering whether there are other steps I should be taking to get the yields back to where they once were.

Any suggestions, bramble growers?

A slice of blackberry pie rests on a plate. The pie filling is a deep purple colour, and small bits of berries can be seen within the filling. The crust is golden brown, and the plate is light grey with a banded rim of dusty pink and medium grey. The plate is on a placemat on top of a wooden table.

My teen and I just got back from a beautiful three and a half hour hike over at Thompson Park, a fair portion of which was spent in the shade snacking on the copious dewberries (π˜™π˜Άπ˜£π˜Άπ˜΄ 𝘀𝘒𝘦𝘴π˜ͺ𝘢𝘴):

Yay! I got an allotment! After over 2 years waiting, I am super excited to be growing, experimenting and learning about plants, veg, soil, herbs and much more!

Lots of work to do though..πŸ˜… brambles and whatnot to clear..
I'll start with a small patch, let see how it goes!

Look at these brambles... That's bad. This place is not properly maintained, it's a shame! How could you let this go so long? Such unattended woods are dangerous, don't you know? It could lead to some rather... disturbing evolution.

A couple more hours digging out the last compost in the right hand heap (it's got a paving slab floor, so I know when I've dug it all out), then shredding some of the brambles (until my shredder blocked because of convolvulus that went in with them). I'm now very hot and sweaty. Sweat running into bramble scratches is particularly unpleasant.

Any recommendations for a pair of gardening gloves which won't let me get stabbed by bramble thorns all the time? Need something akin to a boxing glove but one that I can move my fingers in πŸ˜‚ #Gardening #Brambles #gloves #advice

Life's a gas. Amazing what you can find growing underneath the brambles.

@NorcalGma2 I have blackberries, which produce fruit on 1-year-old canes (from nodes that send out shoots with leaves and flowers), canes which then die in the autumn and winter. So by the spring, I remove the dead canes (which last year produced fruit), leaving the canes that emerged from the soil the previous year (which will produce fruit this year). I do not prune the remaining canes, as that could remove fruit-bearing nodes.
