This is a black and white night time street photo in landscape format looking along two San Francisco cable car (tram) tracks. (2012).

The camera is directed between and parallel to two pairs of cable car tracks, at night and in a deserted street. The shiny steel tracks are neatly recessed into block paving lining the street. Between each set of rails is a wide metal strip with a gap or grove under which lies the moving cable that propels the cable car. On either side of the tracks is a short length of stout wooden posts supporting a rope or chain fashioned as a fence or barrier. Stretching along the posts are a line of evenly spaced trees providing a bushy cover over the street. Each tree trunk is wrapped with multiple small lights similar to those that decorate a Christmas tree. Outside of the trees is a wide pavement with lit but closed shops fronts extending into the distance. The tracks appear to converge with increasing distance and rise upwards as they climb a steep hill in the background.

This is a black and white street photo in portrait format of a stationary San Francisco cable car (2012).

The camera is directed along a straight and wide city street. Below the centre of the image is an iconic San Francisco cable car, stationary, in the middle of the street and at the start of the line. The cable car car is viewed from the front (or perhaps the rear?) (When it gets to the end of the line the driver gets out of the front goes to the rear and doubles back in reverse, though on a parallel track). The cable car is all wood above the metal chassis. On the lower part of the front/back are the words - 'Van Ness Ave California & Market Streets'. Above, are three rectangular windows with a slightly arched roof above. It's a month before Christmas and there is tinsel around the edge of the roof. On either side of the cable car is the usual assortment of city traffic. On either side of the street are the bottom few floors of various high-rise buildings. In the distance, about half a km, the street climbs steeply with the summit being just short of the top of the image, a little strip of white sky is visible in that gap. Where the road climbs so steeply, the two parallel sets of tracks can be seen clearly in the middle of the street.

The location: California Street at the junction with Market Street, looking west, in San Francisco's Business district.
