This planetary nebula is comprised of a symmetrical, butterfly-like structure with bright, glowing filaments of gas and dust expanding outward from a central white ring. The nebula appears to have four main lobes, glowing in shades of gold, blue, and orange, set against a black background. Distant stars are scattered throughout the image.

This release features a composite image of a globular cluster, a sphere-shaped collection of stars bound together by gravity. In this conglomeration are eleven spider pulsars, which obliterate their companion stars with strong winds of particles.

In the main image of this release, scores of tiny white stars dot the blackness of space, many appearing to glow with a white or hot pink aura. Like other globular clusters, this conglomeration, named Omega Centauri, is more densely packed near the center.

A close up image of the densely-packed center of Omega Centaurus reveals even more stars, blanketing the frame from corner to corner. This close up is presented fully labeled, with a white ring encircling nine of the eleven marked spider pulsars.

Each spider pulsar is the spinning core of a collapsed massive star. As they spin, the spider pulsars emit beams of radiation, like light from a lighthouse. The pulsars also produce winds of particles that methodically strip away their companion stars, layer by layer

This is G292.0+1.8 (a really memorable name 😂 ) -- it's a supernova remnant with a pulsar located in the #constellation #Centaurus as seen by #Chandra

This release features a composite image of a supernova remnant, which resembles a ball of swirling, red, purple and blue clouds veined with bright white light.

Inside this supernova remnant, near our lower left, is a white dot; a fast-moving pulsar. This pulsar, J1124-5916, is enlarged in an inset found at the lower left hand corner of the main image. In the enlarged inset, a near-horizontal oblong aura surrounding the dot becomes clear.

From source link in toot: In this composite image, a supermassive black hole at the center of the Centaurus A galaxy shoots an enormous jet of particles into a star-packed sky. Here, Centaurus A resembles an inky purple cloud sitting atop a translucent red cloud. At the heart of the combined cloud structure is the black hole, a brilliant white dot that lights the clouds from within. The jet emerges from this dot, a speckled white and purple beam shooting toward our upper left. Surrounding the entire galaxy is a faint translucent blue bubble shape, which is most pronounced at our lower right. This bubble was created by the jets from the black hole. Both the jets and the bubble are detected by Chandra.

This release features composite images shown side-by-side of two different galaxy clusters, each with a central black hole surrounded by patches and filaments of gas. The galaxy clusters, known as Perseus and Centaurus, are two of seven galaxy clusters observed as part of an international study led by the University of Santiago de Chile.

In each image, a patch of purple with neon pink veins floats in the blackness of space, surrounded by flecks of light. At the center of each patch is a glowing, bright white dot. The bright white dots are black holes. The purple patches represent hot X-ray gas, and the neon pink veins represent filaments of warm gas.

While the images of the two galaxy clusters are broadly similar, there are significant visual differences. In the image of the Perseus Cluster on the left, the surrounding flecks of light are larger and brighter, making the individual galaxies they represent easier to discern. Here, the purple gas has a blue tint, and the hot pink filaments appear solid, as if rendered with quivering strokes of a paintbrush. In the image of the Centaurus Cluster on the right, the purple gas appears softer, with a more diffuse quality. The filaments are rendered in more detail, with feathery edges, and gradation in color ranging from pale pink to neon red.
