Back in 1986 / '87, when I personally was still in Kindergarten, Two Guy from Andromeda created a fantastic graphic adventure game called "Space Quest". It became an instant hit and spawned several sequels.

After all this time, SimCity still is one of my favourite video games ever. And after all these years of collecting, I am still finding new stuff!

Today, I just came across a pristine copy protected disk image of SimCity v1.1 for the Amiga. That one will happily run the game without the need to get any codes from the manual. Also today, I found a slightly more modern version of the Terrain Editor documentation, where they removed the instructions for ATARI systems. "Imho" an interesting bit of gaming history!

Yep, I guess I'm a nerd. 😜

Well, considering this is my very first physical Amiga diskette with a full-on copy protection, everything went way better than expected. Easy peasy!

I managed to extract a perfect KryoFlux stream from the protected disk and its copy protection tracks! Also, the resulting "CT RAW" disk image plays perfectly fine in the latest WinUAE Amiga emulator. Great success! 😜

When it comes to my retro games collection, I am usually trying to find every variant and every available version of a game. Sometimes, this is pretty easy. For games like "Space Quest I - The Sarien Encounter", it is not.

I just added Version 2.2, Interpreter 2.426, 3.5" / 720K as a copy protected TeleDisk disk image. It works!

Jurassic Park for DOS is famous for its on-disk copy protection, so I uploaded a good variety of disk image formats: KryoFlux, TeleDisk, MFM, 86F. All tested and confirmed working on #86Box v4.2.1.

That's s so cool! I had always wanted to add "Krusty's Fun House" for MS-DOS to my retro collection. I've had the floppy disk for years (thanks flyers_80!), but I could never find the correct manual to answer all those pesky copy protection questions.

Tonight I found out, there's a beautiful PDF version of the correct manual within the current eXoDOS collection. All of a sudden, the problem is solved and I can finally play the game! Yay!

But as #Techmoan showed, the idea of a "disposable rental" even existed with #VHS, and whilst #2View got literally #hacked by #clippy at least it's not complete #eWaste as people end up with a #reuseable 140min #Tape after it with allegedly just a little markup compared to a #rental and cheaper than buying a blank tape & renting a movie...

@FritzAdalis @fl0und3r @fence Granted, #OpenBSD usually removes #complexity and stuff that can't be #secured to their standards, and I do applaud them for that.

• Even tho it comes at the cost of a system that isn't easy to get started with, since one's experience and intuition from #Linux won't help one here...

That being said even tho I despise #Netflix, they moved to #FreeBSD as that cuts down on their specific hardware needs, which is ne net and gross positive for the world and #BSD's as they'll need less hardware, datacenter floorspace, cooling, power and thus reduce the impact of their business.

• Tho it's not because Netflix is envoirmentally concious or some other #greenwashing reason, but because their infrastructure is more expensive than personnel and cutting down 5% cost at that is saving them millions even if they pay their BSD engineers 10x to their Linux counterparts.

OFC for #commercial users, BSDs are always more preferable as #GPLv2 of #Linux would basically make it hard to do the "security by obscurity" part of #DRM & #CopyProtection they want on stuff like #GameConsoles.

• BSD is way more permissive and I do like that.

Sadly for many, Linux won for most "mainstream" applications to the point that outside nieche cases, it's a rounding error in statistics.

• That being said many innovations do get adopted where possible, like #OpenZFS support (tho AFAIK OpenBSD lacks that for the aforementioned complexity reasons)...

Thanks to Digitoxin and the generosity of the retro gaming community, we finally have working MFM disk images of the legendary "Book Club" version of Lemmings - perfectly compatible with the 86Box emulator! This version from 1991 includes a few very unique and tricky levels. An awesome addition to game preservation!
