Currently working on a DIY solder fume extractor for my new @iFixit soldering station. As a soldering novice I'm actually quite proud of what I've done so far :)

Stay tuned for another post once I've finished the project (currently still waiting on a USB-PD Trigger board tho so I can try powering everything directly from the FixHub's second USB-C port)...

[Project inspired by YouTuber "DIY Perks"]

A DIY solder fume extractor project in progress. The fume extractor is made from a box that has two holes with fans in them. Next to the upper fan is a button titled "LED" and two exposed wires (intended for an LED strip). Next to the lower fan is a flip switch titled "FAN" that is set to off.
In focus in the picture are a male and a female barrel jack connector end with the female one being completely DIYed and held together with hot glue. The barrel jack ends are now connected, the FAN-switch set to on and the fans are spinning 🥳The inside of the DIY solder fume extractor. It shows two fans (the upper one is already connected to the side of the box), two switches from the back, and a lot of messy wiring (soldered connections are covered by heatshrinks).

@eri even for a #Laptop or #Tablet I consider the #FrameworkDesktop a total "#WontBuy!" on my end, as it has less #Upgradeability and #Repiarability than a #Lenovo #X230Tablet or #Fairphone #FP3plus, mich less anything I consider "#Desktop" hardware.

  • Seriously, @frameworkcomputer could've chosen so much better options or just done some sort of Mounting, adaptors & I/O shield to mount a #FrameworkLaptop mainboard and expand it's I/O to be on-par with a #MacMini and people would've happily accepted that.

It's really sad when #DIYperks put in more effort than an entire company at designing a Desktop!

The guy behind with another perk that will quite literally upsell you an OLED instead.

youtube.com/watch?v=qXrn4MqY1Wo

I mean, the old TV and the projector could barely cost $100. Add $200 and the hassle and you may have something that rivals a good OLED. The problem? The setup is so space consuming that you will be better buying an actual OLED.

@yuki2501 nodds in agreement There's a reason #DIYperks and other #crafting #YouTubers "cheat" by using #MDF & #Veneer, because it allows one to #GetThingsDone without much spechalized tooling and still get good-looking results...

This DIY PlayStation 5 “tablet” puts the guts of Sony’s console into a (kind of) portable game system

Sony’s PlayStation 5 game console has been around since late 2020, but it’s undergone some changes since then, most notably with the launch of a new “PlayStation 5 Slim” model released last fall.
Among other changes? The motherboard has gotten a lot smaller. So YouTuber Matthew Perks decided it was time to transplant that […]

Greetings everyone!

Name's Void_Setup, but feel free to call me whatever. I'm just another #tinkerer open to learning new things while building upon what I already know. :P

My main knacks include recent fascinations with #eeg tech [#neuroprosthetics] and #hardwarehacking, #raspberrypi tinkering, and recycling/modifying old hardware with miscellaneous parts I find [which I might have dumpster dove for]. Example: (WIP) Turning an old laptop display into a desktop monitor (shoutout to #DIYPerks)! Plus, MASSIVE #LINUX NERD!! My fav. distro is #voidlinux!

I also dabble in #programming with #python, #C, and #cplusplus, but I might give #Rust a go once I've become fluent in both python and #micropython. I also dabble in #FreeCAD, #Blender, and #digitalart too, but I need more practice before I can model/sketch my ideas.

Finally, my main project? BUILDING A #PROTOGEN SUIT WITH A PI 5 THAT RIVALS IRON MAN HIMSELF. I WILL FIND A WAY_

Anyways, that's enough from me for now. Peace!

Sincerely,

#introduction

A monochrome plague doctor head made up of an open bracket, a vertical bar, an 8 and a 7, with bunny ears poking out of the open bracket. Inside the right ear seems to be two sets of gears, sparking for unknown reasons, similar in style to an old clockwork automaton with exposed wiring and gears. The open bracket and vertical bar makes a sort of hat with a gear poking out the side of it. They have miscellaneous floating gears strewn about behind them as they wave hello, the 7 resembling the mask modified into grin, with the 8 resembling their eyes turning cheerful in expression.

@machias Personally, I think that #Reusing and #Refurbishing is very important and can be done...

And even a broken machine can be salvaged by parting it out and #Upcycle|d like #DIYperks showcased here:

Triple Monitor Luggable PC Is An All In One Powerhouse

[Matt] from [DIY Perks] has made a name for himself building nice custom computing machines, and his latest triple-monitor luggable PC (video after the break) is sure to give most high-performance desktop machines a run for their money.

The large central monitor folding laptop monitors mounted vertically on either size look impressive, but only just scratches the surface of this build. Hidden behind aluminum panels are Ryzen 5950X CPU and RTX 3080 GPU with water cooling, 64 GB of RAM, and two 8 TB SSDs. A set of high-quality speaker drivers, subwoofer, and audio amps is also included. All this hardware pulls about 600 W of power from a large DC-DC converter block, which in turn receives power from either a pair of onboard AC-DC converters or a 16 V - 63 V DC source, like a battery system.

To mount everything to the back of the main monitor, [Matt] created 3D printed adaptor blocks with threaded inserts which slide under existing hooks on the back of the monitor. Aluminum angles screw to these blocks to cover the edges of the display panel, together with a large mounting plate with pre-drilled holes to mount all the components on standoffs. A set of adjustable and removable legs mount to the side of the PC. A hinged door in the back cover allows storage space for a keyboard and mouse during transport. When folded, the laptop monitors don't fully cover the main monitor, so [Matt] created a leather cover that doubles as a cable and accessory organizer.

Whether its dual screens and an integrated SDR, or a rotating-folding screen, there is no shortage of ways to build a portable powerhouse.
