Relaxing Saturday post bridal
Pick up including a morning paddle and then a bit of arts and crafts… occasional sad use of plastic bottles means I want to reuse them when I can…. And the spoons have been around in my picnic supplies for years…

#OrilliaOntario - Need something fixed? #Orillia #RepairCafé returning in April

Event taking place April 5 at St. James' Anglican Church

Mar 14, 2025

"Local residents are invited to bring their broken or torn possessions to St. James’ Church on Saturday, April 5 (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), where 'fixers' will be on hand to make repairs and turn their 'trash' into 'treasure' at the eighth Orillia Repair Café, which takes place twice a year.

"The event is supported by local volunteers and Sustainable Orillia, St. James’ Anglican Church and Lake Country Time Trade.

"Light refreshments will be provided as well as child-friendly activities. A new feature this year will be '#BookSwaps,' one for adults and one for children. The café has a friendly and fun ambience and combines an enjoyable family activity with a rewarding outcome.

"Annalise Stenekes has led the project since its inception and has gathered a dedicated and talented team of fixers who will attempt to repair a variety of items, including bicycles, lamps, home appliances, sewing machines, jewelry and audio/visual and computer equipment. Small furniture items will be repaired, clothing and footwear mended and toys given new life.

"Last year, 230 kilograms of items were given a new lease on life, diverting potential waste from the #landfill and saving an estimated $1,000.

"'#Repairing and #reusing broken items, as opposed to disposing of them and purchasing new ones, is a practical and meaningful contribution we can make for our environment,' says local resident Wendy Kirk. 'The Repair Café is also a feel-good place — at times the joy is tangible when someone’s prized item is restored to its former usefulness.'

"Repair Café events are happening around the world, saving money, reducing landfill waste, cutting CO2 emissions, promoting learning and fostering community connections."

The #sapphics are asking: is it weird to #reuse a #strap with another #partner

#Queer #intimacy comes in all shapes and sizes, and requires different #instruments for different #tastes. None of this is news, but on #TikTok, a few questions are being raised about the #ethics of #reusing a certain…#tool.

I've finally learned what "upward compatible" means. It means we get to keep all our old mistakes.

I wanna make these so much. I have so many old boards and don't want them to be landfilled (which they likely would, look up ewaste). I have epoxy and files so it should be easy for me to do 🤔

@lowpass well, that's the beauty of #SpectrumRegulations and #SpectrumEnforcement:

Also CB can get good range out of COTS transcievers ( 80 km easy out of a simple station antenna - 20 km out of a good mobile handset), it is a cheap "long-range" solution given the lack of need for licensing.

  • OFC unlike #HamRadio there are way higher chances of abusive behaviour in theory but in return it allows for interesting setups that have way lower electromagnetic footprint, like recieve-only DIY pagers running off cheap #RTLSDR chipsets (#RTL2832U + #R820T-2) that barely consume power...

But then again it depends on whether or not one values analog radio capabilities or not, and whether or not.one trusts users to setup stuff properly.

  • #LoRa makes it easy by virtue of being a "transparent" solution to the user at the cost of flexibility.

  • #SDR transcievers like the #YardStickOne and can be really powerful, the latter one propably even be used for #SCPC over SAT with a proper #BUC & Voltage applied to that (don't forget the power-blocker at the HackRF's input/output ports (!!!), but if someone wants to have a Sub-€100 setup for transmission ans Sub-€50 for recieval, there ain't many as flexible as #AFSK'ing over CB Radio even at the expense of efficiency.

  • Also one doesn't end up with a ton of basically "unsalvageable" #eWaste if one gives up on said project or has to scrap it for whatever reason, and #reusing is always better than buying new if feasible...

Collected a bunch of can pulls and wanted to make something out of them. This is an idea I had.

I had a whole watermellon and after scooping it out I cut the outer skin away and saved the rind and pickled it.

I did it sometime last year I think, but I followed a different recipe. I think last time I just made a salty brine like liquid. But I made a mixture of soy sauce, salt water, cider vinegar and sugar... I need to leave it for a few days to do somethin.

You can also use the rinds in stirfries and stuff like that too.

@mu This is one kind of reuse center that I found on the web. It's something a local library could sponsor. Also, there are places that do that with building materials (#HabitatForHumanity #ReStores).

#CreativeReuse Centers Benefit #Communities & the #Planet

By Maureen Wise

"What Is a #CreativeReuseCenter?

"A creative reuse center is a #CraftThriftStore and so much more. It’s a business or nonprofit organization that collects #usable materials, leftovers, or surplus creative supplies and redistributes them to the community for reuse. These organizations accept donations from individuals as well as manufacturers, industry partners, and businesses. Donations can be in the form of leftover craft supplies such as your craft stash. They may also include cabinet or flooring samples from a home renovation company or the end of a roll of vinyl from a sign manufacturer.

"Each center makes decisions differently and has different donors and #donations rules, but the ethos is consistent: They help people see the potential in useable waste as art. The creative possibilities of cast-off materials are limited only by the imagination of the artist. Creative reuse is all about #upcycling and #repurposing: elevating and #reusing an unwanted material or item into something entirely new with purposeful value."

I scanned the ink in canvas art piece I did. I found some empty printer ink cartridges and essentially just leaked/ dripped them onto a canvas notepad.

Thought it looked colourful and chaotic but like simple. Thought about making prints haha.

I always find air matresses break so easily... they always seem to leak and never last Dx

I tried to make a jacket thinking it would work similar to a hard sythetic leather material. I was kinda wrong, it's kinda just stiff. Pics tommorow.

The material can be sewed rather easily and can be superglued very effectively. You could totally make an old one into a picnic blanket!! Maybe tarp?

I do like picking up old PCs people throw away and either scavenge parts or bring it back to a usable state, usually running a lightweight #linux distro. This isn't for nostalgia but because free useful stuff is always nice - in the past I'd give the fixed up/upgraded old PC to a relative or friend who might need it, but this latest one is a Dell Optiplex 755 from 2006 and few people would want these unsexy utilitarian PCs these days.

Except for me because it's fun.
