#FrameworkDesktop

For the first time in 15 years, I'm interested in a desktop computer product. I can't even fully explain why.

frame.work/desktop

A person with blonde hair and sunglasses wearing headphones with a microphone, sitting in front of a computer monitor displaying a game. They are wearing a blue and white plaid shirt and dark shorts. On the desk are a keyboard, a mouse, and a black Framework Desktop computer tower with colored squares on the side, standing upright. Logos for Epic Games, Steam, and GOG.com are visible above the person.

@jbqueru Also I hope for #RISCv to be the #ISA of the future for long-term #OpenSourceHardware and support.

#ARM64 - just like #amd64 - is yet another proprietary ISA and almost all devices with it in terms of #Laptops have #AntiRepairDesign like #Apple's #MacBook|s that self-destroy their #SSD|s which also contains it's #EFI / "#BridgeOS", making machines with fried SSDs 'braindead'

And yes, #RAM to also fails and making it not fully replaceable and upgradeable is inherently bad and I'm still mad at @frameworkcomputer for their botched #FrameworkDesktop #PC!

  • Cuz it's neither necessary nor beneficial for a #Desktop PC, unlike with the #Framework12 where the #SoC used only supports single channel and a single SODIMM so it makes sense for them to take that into account.

Let's get into the HX 390 MAX rabbit hole for a moment.

Which is the cheaper model that has been announced?

I'll tell you. The Motherboard at $800 with (soldered) 32GB LPDDR5. Not a consumer-oriented product.

So yeah, the bulk of consumers will pick an RTX computer or a Mac.

@eri even for a #Laptop or #Tablet I consider the #FrameworkDesktop a total "#WontBuy!" on my end, as it has less #Upgradeability and #Repiarability than a #Lenovo #X230Tablet or #Fairphone #FP3plus, mich less anything I consider "#Desktop" hardware.

  • Seriously, @frameworkcomputer could've chosen so much better options or just done some sort of Mounting, adaptors & I/O shield to mount a #FrameworkLaptop mainboard and expand it's I/O to be on-par with a #MacMini and people would've happily accepted that.

It's really sad when #DIYperks put in more effort than an entire company at designing a Desktop!

@jacqueline yeah, The @frameworkcomputer #FrameworkDesktop is a major let-down to me because it's just a "shittier #MacStudio" and #SolderedDownRAM is not excuseable at that form factor!

  • Seriously, just no!

I think yesterday's @FrameWorkComputer event made it abundantly clear that the company is turning into a "AI tech reference hardware" company. The headliner "desktop" is only really useful for AI developers. The 13 AMD laptop refresh was a boring spec bump and the most fascinating product, the Framework 12, barely got any screen time other than the revelation that "it exists." My only Framework device, the Framework Laptop 16, didn't get any airtime other than a shoehorned announcement of a new keyboard switch. I was hoping for some news about better designed input modules or thermal solutions (those are two of my three pain points with it right now). #FrameWork #FrameWorkDesktop

No SSD. No OS. No CPU Fan. No Expansion Card.

Yeah, thanks but no thanks. By the time these ship in Q3 2025 (July-September) you will have competitive laptops with and an on shelves, and the .

The soldered down memory on the new framework desktop is a bummer but I get it. AMD wanted high bandwidth memory now, and maybe the CAMM2 standard isn't up to task yet.

It's priced well and will probably make for a nice local LLM server. As usual my biggest concern is AMD's ROCm layer.

The Desktop PC really is something I'm interested in, but I wonder how the pricing will work.

At $1,099 doesn't seem too bad, buy even then it still has to battle with laptops with an RTX at that price point.

Again, the + Intel combo is readily available in terms of graphics and power, so I don't see this flying off from shelves, but what do I know.

okay uhh i'm not as hyped anymore, was hoping there'd be something for framework 16, but we got nothing (i'm gonna ignore that singular keycap thing)

framework desktop seems cool though, lack of upgradable RAM sucks but when you look into it, you'll see why it's soldered

the fact that you can buy these boards separately and drop them into any case you want is a big plus, and the 32gb version doesn't look too bad for a steam machine-like build

Framework Desktop is a compact, modular desktop PC with AMD Strix Halo

After four years of producing modular, repairable, and upgradeable laptops, Framework is branching out into desktops with the introduction of a new Framework Desktop computer. It’s a 4.5 liter PC powered by an AMD Strix Halo processor with support for up to a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 16-core, 32-thread processor with 40-core RDNA 3.5 graphics and 128GB of unified LPDDR5x memory.

While it’s hardly […]
