Looking forward to welcoming the @OceanIceEU community to #DMIdk today for our annual meeting. I think I'm correct in saying it's the first time we have had such a large gathering of #Antarctic focused #Science here at the institute, though I doubt it will be the last

My #DMIdk colleague Kjeld Qvistgaard of the #Ice service talking on stage at #EPSW24 on the importance of high quality accessible products. People don't actually care I'd you use #AI to make the ice charts or not, as long as they get easy access to high quality information!

An unforecast rain storm, not even in the nowcast suddenly starts right over DMI's building, leading to murmurings in the #DMIdk research dept....

Beautiful example of convective shower and how difficult they are to forecast. And how annoying when you use the radar to plan your commute #Wx

Proud to say that we have a paper out in #TC about the 2016 #Melt event over the Ros ice shelf #Antarctica we have evaluated how well models capture this extreme melt event.

Another long work day but this time inside our workshop, getting ready to finalise the start of a new measurement programme. With the melange field programme now more or less done for the next few months (until the fast ice breaks up), it's time to turn to snow...

So today has mostly been spent working on new equipment designed to measure drifting snow, hopefully now ready for deployment tomorrow or Tuesday after some snow on sea ice work planned for tomorrow.

Here's a low Arctic sun moment to ponder: my #dmidk #nckf colleague Steffen Olsen walking away from Heilprin glacier melange zone earlier this week.

This storm that #DMIdk is forecasting for SE #Greenland will likely bring melt at lower elevations but snow higher up that may well delay the onset of the ablation season further.

As we prepare to move from #DMIdk's university style offices to a new open plan office (with #hotdesking 😒) later this year, @TimHarford's podcast on how (not to) #design an office + associated concepts like #power + the ability to influence your own space seems very relevant.

Amid #ChatGPT hype there has been a remarkable advance in use of #machineLearning for #Weather + #Climate- my ace #DMIdk colleague Peter Ukkonen shared this (uses #ECMWF #ERA5 as training data!)

"Our results show GraphCast is more accurate than ECMWF’s deterministic operational forecasting system, HRES, on 90.0% of the 2760 variable + lead time combinations ... GraphCast can generate a 10-day forecast (35Gb of data) in under 60 seconds on Cloud TPU v4 hardware."
