Had been using an ancient install of G4KLX's Dstar stuff on an old Raspberry PI 2 and a 70cm DVAP Dongle - switched that out to a Raspberry Pi 4b running Pi Star with that same dongle - much nicer and more modern!

I, too, am old.

I start as an Icom fanboy, so naturally have 3 #DSTAR capable radios and am currently admin of "VE2RM B" (and formerly "W5TC B").

DMR, which unlike D-STAR & #YSF doesn't encode callsigns, has *one* advantage over the others: TDMA.

Otherwise, it shares the same issues w/the others: proprietary codec & over-reliance on commodity internet for linking.

Never copied YSF, but I never really heard a difference between DMR & D-STAR (or even P25).

@HopelessDemigod I don't know how #DMR compares, but there is very little #DSTAR activity outside of reflectors REF030C and REF001C. And really, there isn't much on #SystemFusion besides Americalink.

i have a #homepatrol2 #radio scanner here in philly for all the analog and p25 systems for PPD/Septa and there's a lot of #amateurradio on digital formats out here, even #WIRES and #nxdn.

in #iow its mostly #dstar and #DMR. every part of the united states has their own preferences, local customs in radio communications are pretty interesting. don't forget analog is spoken everywhere.

I am rethinking my use of #dmr. If it worked like a trunking system where I can roam, that would be useful. But static talkgroups and limits on what I can dynamically use make it rather clumsy.

I will say, the audio quality on #dstar and #ysf is waaaaay better.
