🌟 This week, we had a great time meeting people at the Brimbank Disability, Seniors & Carers Expo! Many people were surprised to learn that we are not part of the Council. We are a small, independent group run by volunteers. We do not get any money from the government, and some of our members even use their own pensions to keep our group going! 💙

We’re committed to staying independent and working toward incorporation, so that we can apply for grants and get more support for our disability community. If you want to help, please contact us! 🙌

A special thanks to Jo Briskey MP, David Ettershank MP (and his office manager David P), Mayor Cr Thuy Dang, and Councillors Virginia Tachos and Kim Thien Truong, for taking the time to meet with us. And huge thanks to our dedicated members Jo and Lorraine, for their hard work preparing for and at the event! 👏

💻 Please like our page to follow what we do (facebook.com/brimbankdisability).
If you want to become a member, head to facebook.com/groups/brimbankdisability or email us at brimbankdisability@gmail.com.
Links also in bio.

Together, we can do great things! 💪💙

Some people in the disability community will promote awareness & advocacy for X disability and then say they’re “not political” They don’t realize by simply identifying as having X disability, their existence is “political” #DisabilityCommunity #DisabledCommunity

We can look at making the service / memorial hybrid so that people who can’t make it in person can join. As soon as I have more news about when the date of the funeral will be, I will post here again.
Please share this information with any of your mutual contacts, as I don’t have you all on here.

However, I received a call today from a solicitor, as it appears Lisa left a will, and had some instructions for a funeral, which is a huge help.
The solicitors will be organising the funeral and will be keeping me posted. It is going to be in Colchester but we will have to wait a few more weeks because the coroner is still processing her death and hasn’t issued a death certificate. 2/3 #disability #DisabilityCommunity #UKDisabledPeople

An Update from Charly about @lisybabe's funeral arrangements:

Hi everyone,
I’m so sorry for the delay with information about this, but there have been a lot of challenges surrounding Lisa’s death and organising a funeral. I was told by the coroner that they have not been able to contact any living relatives of Lisa’s, which has caused complications. 1/3

🌟 Introduction Post 🌟

Hi everyone! 👋 I'm Lanie Molinar Carmelo (she/her), and I'm thrilled to join the amazing community here on allovertheplace.ca! Here's a little about me:

🧑‍💻 Who I Am

I'm a #UsabilityTester and an aspiring #AccessibilityConsultant, working to make technology better for everyone, especially those of us with disabilities. I'm most passionate about helping those with multiple disabilities, as it's an area that doesn't get enough attention.

🐾 Meet Squeaker!

I'm also the proud human to my 10-year-old Miniature Pinscher, Squeaker, who is the best little companion anyone could ask for. 🐕💖 He drives me nuts sometimes, but I don't know what I'd do without him. My profile picture features me with Squeaker, and my header shows him wrapped in a blanket with just his adorable face peeking out!

📚 What I’m Studying

I'm currently learning:

  • Digital Accessibility through the BIT Accessibility Analyst Course
  • Literary Braille Proofreading via the NLS
  • Programming on platforms like freeCodeCamp and Codecademy

My goal is to develop accessible apps that empower people with disabilities, contribute to open-source projects that promote inclusion, and just do what I can to make the world more accessible.

💡 What I Do

I run or co-lead several online support groups for people with multiple disabilities. These groups provide safe spaces to connect, share resources, and talk with others who "get it." You can find them here:

  • Facebook: Multiple Disabilities Peer to Peer Support Group
  • Discord/Mailing List: MultAbilities
  • Clubhouse: People with Multiple Disabilities

Right now, my focus is on growing these groups and making connections with others who are passionate about supporting multiply disabled individuals. If you're interested in joining or collaborating, feel free to reach out or check out my website at laniecarmelo.tech, where you'll find links to all the groups!

🎮📖🍴 My Interests

When I’m not advocating or studying, you can find me:

I also love swimming 🏊‍♀️ when my health allows it.

🛠️ My Goals

One day, I hope to found a nonprofit organization to support multiply disabled individuals. The nonprofit would:

  • Provide peer support groups
  • Help fund assistive technology
  • Advocate for education and employment opportunities
  • Collaborate with disability-focused organizations to improve accessibility

For now, I'm focused on running my support groups and building connections that could help make this dream a reality. If you have ideas or resources—or just want to chat—let me know! 🤝

🤝 Let’s Connect!

I’m always happy to chat about:

  • Accessibility in #tech or tech in general
  • Disability advocacy
  • Programming (#HTML, #JavaScript)
  • Braille
  • Books
  • Or just life in general!

Feel free to follow me here or check out my website at laniecarmelo.tech.

Kate, Lizzie and Charlotte, three of @lisybabe’s friends, are devastated to say that Lisa passed away at home. We were informed of her death last night by the police. Lisa will be remembered for her fierce disability rights activism and love for her two cats, Betty and Biscuit.

Biscuit has been found safe and well, and Holly (of Merry Moggies) will be taking care of him, as Lisa requested. Further details about funeral arrangements to follow. #disability #DisabilityCommunity #UKDisabledPeople

A white woman (Lisa) with a labret facial piercing is lying horizontal. A small black cat (Betty) is cradled in her arms.A white woman with purple glasses (Lisa) is ducked behind a large ginger cat (biscuit). Only her eyes and dark hair are fully visible.

I'm looking to create an online group for people with multiple disabilities, their caregivers, and allies. Seeking recommendations for accessible, free, and user-friendly platforms!

Key needs:
• Accessible for various disabilities
• Easy to use (even for non-tech-savvy folks)
• Free to host
• Not Facebook

Any suggestions from the community? What platforms have worked well for you?

Something a little different for this week’s article - a guide to the Twitter/X exodus from a disability and chronic illness point of view.

People are leaving the site in droves - whether because of changing privacy and data policies or in protest of Musk and Trump’s increasingly fascist and problematic behaviour.

What happens to the disability community who’ve long relied on that app for support, friendship and connection? People who are sick can’t migrate to a new platform as easily as their non-disabled counterparts.

How can we help people find community elsewhere? How can we ensure the transition takes as few spoons as possible?

Most importantly - how can we ensure no one gets left behind?

What a Second Trump Term Might Mean for Disability Policy
Project 2025 Wants to Make it Harder for the Disabled Community to Get Education, Housing and Health Care…Trump himself has said little about disability policy, but his behavior offers little reason for reassurance. He infamously mocked Serge Kovaleski, a disabled New York Times reporter. Trump’s nephew recalled him saying “The shape they’re in, all the expenses, maybe those kinds of people should just die.” A recent article recounts him describing President Biden using a slur for people with intellectual disabilities. #Disability #DisabilityCommunity #Disabled #politics #USPolitics #USElection #USElection2024

@callisto @dyani
I definitely appreciate the feedback, and I'm always wondering about alt text, as well as things like this. I'm sorry you have trouble with the colors on my site, but I see my friend Dyani is on the case. She's great like that, and she'll probably find something to help.

I use the color scheme and font for my own disabilities, to accommodate a few things. If you ever have time to chat back and forth, I'll be glad to change the theme around for you to sample. I can't guarantee the one that works best for you will be the one that I use, but we can try.

Accommodating others is important to me, but at the same time I have to accommodate my disabilities as well. I understand the dilemma and appreciate your patience and your feedback.

If you're disabled, and you only consider and accommodate people with your particular disability, you might be an ablest... Strike that, you are! I'm not always Pollyanna, sometimes I'm Oscar the grouch. Please don't take the lid off my can.

A bit about me:
- I live with my mom and stepdad, who are my caregivers
- I have a Miniature Pinscher named Squeaker
- Currently studying programming on freeCodeCamp.org and codecademy.com and Braille proofreading through the NFB
- I work as a usability tester and aspire to become an #accessibility consultant
- My goal is to create a nonprofit for people with multiple #disabilities

My interests include:
- #Gaming (especially accessible games like incremental/idle games, word games, puzzles, RPGs, roguelikes, and MUDs)
- #Technology and #Cybersecurity
- #RareDiseases and #DisabilityRights
- Reading (sci-fi, fantasy, thrillers, mysteries, and nonfiction)
- Swimming
- Gardening (planning to start soon!)

I'm passionate about #accessibility and creating a more inclusive digital world. I run online groups for people with multiple disabilities and am active in the #DisabilityCommunity.

Some of my #health conditions include occipital neuralgia, intracranial hypertension, Empty Sella Syndrome, fibromyalgia, hidradenitis suppurativa, GERD, gastroparesis, IBS, sleep apnea, migraines, and non-24-hour sleep-wake disorder.

I use various devices to navigate the digital world, including a Windows computer, iPhone, Android tablet, Fire TV, Echo Dot, Apple Watch, wireless headphones, and a Braille display. #AssistiveTechnology

I'm always eager to connect with others who share similar experiences or interests. Feel free to reach out, especially if you're into #AccessibleTech, #DisabilityAdvocacy, or if you just want to chat about books, games, or life with multiple disabilities!

Think I’m going to take a moment to rest. I have an important meeting with someone from #DisabilityRightsTexas at 2:00 PM, and it’s just after 12:00 PM here. I'm feeling pretty exhausted. I'm working on getting support for #vocationalRehabilitation, which can be challenging since they often hesitate to assist those of us with multiple disabilities who can’t work full-time. Thankfully, #DRTX is stepping in to ensure I get the help I need.
