Scientists unravel drivers of the global cycle in our oceans, with implications for a changing climate
Studying the Southern Ocean is important as it acts as a central hub for global ocean circulation. Processes occurring in the Southern Ocean are imprinted on water masses which are then transported to the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans.

It was world ocean day yesterday, so here's some imagery from our Ocean I've had the immense privilege to capture and share...

1: Isbjørn (polar bear) reflected in a sea ice lead. The Arctic is a world of two Ocean states - solid and liquid, both playing their part.

2: Minke whale surfacing through sea ice to breathe. The Antarctic is seasonally also a world of solid Ocean, an ephemeral landscape. Half a planet away yet still deeply connected...

3: A spectacular Ocean/land interface at Point Perpendicular, on the east coast of Australia. The conversation over aeons of rock and sea is incredibly present here...

4: Sunset off Zanzibar - it's easy here to see how the Ocean shapes us. Both for subsistence and really just being.

5: the Ocean made solid. A sea ice core under cross polarized light, showing it's crystal structure - which is a history of how it was made, in turn a story about the state of the Ocean at the time.

All of these are connected, each a part of the Ocean system. What happens in Zanzibar makes it's way to the poles, what happens at the poles impacts our coastlines, our interactions, our stories.

The Ocean connects us all...

Just like #ClimateScience more generally, it seems you can't write an article about the biophysical damage caused by #ArticialIntelligence without some sort of #HopeCoda - in the case of #AI, saying "but it may help us solve climate"

Most of these proposed "solutions" that use AI simply monitor our destruction of #habitat and #EarthSystems

Very few are actually about reducing that destruction

This is just another form of #Greenwash and needs to be called out as such

The ‘flickering’ of #EarthSystems is warning us: act now, or see our already degraded paradise lost

When #RishiSunak granted 27 new #NorthSea licences this week, he wasn’t thinking about the #survival of the living world

@mazzeri well done! I agree, you are being conservative in your estimate. With multiple tipping points of major oceanic-atmospheric systems already crossed by now e.g. #GIS, #WAIS, #Amazon, #AMOC, #CoralReefs, it is clear that "the sky's the limit" in terms of impending climate destruction an human-caused destruction of our planet. Which says nothing about #habitat and #biodiversity loss. Or #ocean #acidification. Or, or, or ... The best guess is that the #AMOC will have completely broken down ca. 2050, quite possibly sooner. We are already in uncharted territory now, so to talk about future uncharted territory ... it beggars belief, especially as so much of this destruction has already been programmed by humans into #Earth systems #EarthSystems ... thoroughly enervating.

As our first week comes to an end, we want to express our gratitude to Prof Brian Rose for his introductory presentation on Climate Models, as well as to our speakers, Jenna Pearson, Abigail Bodner, and Brodie Pearson, who have prepared a series of tutorials to lead you from fundamental climate models, with just a few variable, to more Earth System Models based on #CESM2 from the recent Coupled Model Intercomparison Project #CMIP6

New paper in the journal Nature well worth a read. "Safe and just Earth system boundaries" (#Nature, 31. May 2023, Rockström, Gupta, Kin, Lade et al.)

7 out of 8 Earth System Boundaries (ESBs) are already in the unsafe, out-of-bounds zone, and have already crossed the "red line" (see attached figure). The #climate has not yet crossed the red line, but is getting very close, of course.

"#Humanity is well into the #Anthropocene, the proposed new geological epoch where human pressures have put the #Earth system on a trajectory moving rapidly away from the stable #Holocene state of the past 12,000 years, which is the only state of the Earth system we have evidence of being able to support the world as we know it. These rapid changes to the Earth system undermine critical life-support systems with significant societal impacts already felt, and they could lead to triggering tipping points that irreversibly destabilize the Earth system. These changes are mostly driven by social and economic systems run on unsustainable resource extraction and consumption.

Contributions to Earth system change and the consequences of its impacts vary greatly among social groups and countries. Given these interdependencies between inclusive human development and a stable and resilient Earth system an assessment of safe and just boundaries is required that accounts for Earth system resilience and human well-being in an integrated framework."

Visualization of safe ESBs (dark red), just (NSH) ESBs (blue), cases where safe and just (NSH) boundaries align (green) and current global states (Earth icons). Radial axes are normalized to safe ESBs. Headline or central estimate global boundaries (Table 1) are plotted to support comparison with the current global state, but we emphasize that we have also defined subglobal boundaries and multiple likelihood levels for many domains (Table 1). For aerosols, however, we display the subglobal boundaries to compare safe and just boundaries. For nitrogen, we plot with a dashed blue line the boundary quantification for harm from nitrate in groundwater while noting that the just boundary must also incorporate safe considerations via eutrophication, leading to a more stringent safe and just boundary. Minimum access to water, food, energy and infrastructure for all humans (dotted green line) could constitute the foundation of a safe and just ‘corridor’ (green filled area), but we do not quantify this foundation here.

If anyone is looking for papers to catch up with for their #NewYearResolution - I post about new Earth Science papers every Friday over on Twitter (twitter.com/BialikOr) with the hashtag #WeekendReading if you're looking for some recommendations. Ranges from #geochemistry and #paleoclimate to #oceanography and #EarthSystems.
(I should really start posting them also on Mastodon - check this space on Friday to see if I remembered)
