Another cool find in my garden today: the weirdest looking ant I've ever found.

inaturalist.org/observations/2

A new species for me, and a new species record for my garden, now at 13 Ants, 149 Hymenoptera, and 514 Insect species/taxa.

#DailySpiderPic: "Well, this is awkward
" An ant-mimic jumping spider (_Synageles_) crosses paths with a _Prenolepis imparis_ ant. Its disguise is meant to put off potential predators that won't mess with ants—but the ants themselves rely more on chemical cues and aren't fooled. I saw a couple of _Synageles_ on this planter and they both carefully avoided the ants.

A small dark brown ant-mimic jumping spider on the wall of a planter made of pebbles in concrete. The spider holds a pair of legs up like antennae, and its white stripes and elongated abdomen create the illusion of three body segments. Off to the left, an ant approaches (out of focus). The ant, a dark brown winter ant, is turned towards the camera and now rather close to the spider, which is bobbing its abdomen up and down the way ants do.The ant turns towards the spider (out of focus on the right). The spider begins to slowly back away from the ant.

"We used a device that permitted individual ants to travel from the nest to a feeder via a single bridge under four conditions; unidirectional inward ant traffic, where naive foraging ants contacted only colony members returning from the feeder along a pheromone trail; foraging following a pheromone trail without ant traffic; foraging with neither a pheromone trail nor ant traffic; foraging with bidirectional ant traffic, where naive ants encountered other ants moving both toward the feeder and returning on the pheromone trail. The time required by inexperienced ants to reach the feeder was shorter in the unidirectional condition (returning from the feeder) than the other three conditions. These findings suggest that specific cues can regulate the movement of pheromone-guide foraging by ants."

A winged Asian Weaver Ant (Oecophylla smaragdina) spotted at the Rail Corridor, Singapore on 31 Dec 2024. This is usually the only time when I see their bodies in green (it is usually red).

A few photos from my walk today, showcasing this cool I walk past every day.

There's a low hill covered in ivy near the path, but a section of it has been neatly cleared of ivy. For whatever reason, the keep it trimmed back from the top of the hill.

Bonus flowering tree, since why not.

And now for something different. This is one of the trap-jaw ants. If you know which one, please let me know. Several months ago, we had major rain and wind storms damaging lots of trees. I found this colony under a broken branch that has started settling into the dirt. After snapping a couple of pictures, I gently placed the branch back where it was. It must be quite stressful for them.

A large nearly black ant carries a tan pupa that is nearly as big as itself in its massive mandibles. Its head is very blocky with largish eyes and deep furrows that its antennae can fit in. The rest of its body is long and slender but out of focus.

Back on by bullshit about the weavers again... It's not my fault... They are just too interesting.

The weavers were oddly calm today. No defensive posturing or holding their front legs and mandible wide defensively. I don't think I was sprayed with formic acid once. Then I saw this odd scene. Four weavers all biting and pulling a tiny black ant apart. Two of the executioners sat and preened each other as the other two absconded with the corpse.

I'm not sure exactly who this is, but I believe it is a Sculpted Tree Ant. I wish I had my higher magnification lens and better diffusion setup as it was so cooperative.

Tiny scene from the garden: a _Prenolepis imparis_ ant carrying aphid(?) prey. These cold-tolerant ants are the rulers of the garden, but despite their numbers they have never given me any trouble.
