A thought-provoking and wide-ranging talk yesterday by Andy Wickert, University of Minnesota.

His group has tracked changes in drainage patterns during the final deglaciation of Minnesota (~11 thousand years ago) to changes in erosion rates since the advent of mechanical agriculture.

A map of possible water sources for the upper Mississippi River at the end of the last ice age. Calcium-rich sediments source from Lake Agassiz while iron- an copper-containing sediments are from the Superior basin, via the ancestral St. Croix river. From: Shanti B. Penprase et al. Depth corresponds to age of the sediments. The switch in source between Lake Agassiz and Superior coincides with the blocking of eastward drainage of the Superior basin by advancing ice.

"A Brief Guide to the Last Glaciation" How did the North Sea develop? This piece develops the history of the ice sheets over Britain and Europe. This theory uses all the most recent technical data available, and comes up with a course of prehistoric modification of the British landscape that is not recognised by academic circles at this time.
A more detailed account is being developed, giving evidence and reasoned calculations for the processes involved.

Reading up on the #Cordilleran ice sheet, which is/was the ice sheet on the west coast of North America during the current period of #glaciation (from 2,580,000 years ago to present.)

#Wikipedia's article has an uncited section about #Refugia which includes a possibly controversial statement - needs tagging:

"…evidence of ice-free refugia above present sea level north of the Olympic Peninsula has been refuted by genetic and geological studies since the middle 1990s."

🟢 at the Final Event in Athens

Yesterday, Mpampis Chatzimallis presented the GLACIATION EU project at the ENCRYPT Project Final Event, during the afternoon session focused on related projects.

His presentation showcased GLACIATION’s work on privacy-preserving, cross-border data collaboration, and the technical and governance frameworks that enable secure data sharing in complex environments.

“HIGHLIGHTS
• Hydrologic models were used to assess remotely sensed surface water estimates.
• The accuracy of satellite surface water estimates diminished for waterbodies < 2 ha.
• Vegetation reduces accuracy of surface water detection, especially during wet years..."

Scientists are coming closer to understanding the period of time during Marinoan period. This was about 720 million years ago and the earth is called "snowball earth' during this time. The period lasted somewhere between 4 and 15 million years ago. Scientists have been trying to narrow the time period down. Now by using isotopic dating of ash layers this has been narrowed to it lasting 4 million years.

Grand day in the Mull hills yesterday. Here are some superb ice-moulded ridges of quartz gabbro (ring dyke? of Centre 2, Paleocene) just south of Mam Clachaig. A' Chioch (mountain on left) and Beinn Fhada (right) in distance. #Mountains #Mull #Geology #Glaciation

A view of a mountain landscape under a blue blue sky. A high conical mountain of grey rocks with scree is in the left background, while a smooth grassy mountain with a small rocky peak is on the right. I nthe fiorground a series of clean smooth grooved ridges of grey rock form the foreground.

Excellent visit earlier this week to Torosay Sand Limited's gravel quarry in eastern Mull. Most of the quarry consists of bedded gravel and sand deposited by glacial melt rivers around 16 to 15 thousand years ago when most of Scottish glacier ice melted away. But these are overlain by a couple of meters of grey till produced by local Mull glaciers during the "Loch Lomond Readvance" when ice grew again in western Scotland between about 13000 and 11700 years ago. #Geology #Glaciation #Mull

The side of a gravel quarry viewed from below, looking up to a blue blue sky with a little fluffy cloud, and some trees and fence posts on the skyline. Most of the quarry face consists of gravel and sand layers, with rounded pebbles and boulders, but the top layer, just below modern vegetation, is a massive grey layer of clay with scattered boulders.
