#HENS

One of our old hens (the one in the middle with the green ring) was close to dying. I think she's about 5 years old and no longer lays eggs. She already had a dark blue comb, was bloated and lethargic. I managed to save her again, or at least prolong her life a little.
What I did: I isolated the chicken briefly, gave her a raw egg to eat, massaged her crop for a few minutes and pressed it gently, then she vomited. It smelled bad. In a few hours, things started looking up again and she started slowly eating and moving.
I didn't have to save a human life, but I did save the life of an old chicken.
I don't know exactly what was wrong with the bird. Maybe she was dehydrated and had pecked too much salt. The water supply was shortly cut because the can was covered with ice for some hours. Or maybe she is just too cold and old. Chickens can withstand double-digit sub-zero temperatures, but it's important to keep their environment and nests dry and clean. No draughts. And make use of the hours of sunshine and offering fresh bales to scratch around to keep them moving.

☝️ This was the very first caption of the very first photo I posted on Pixelfed a year ago. It's my #Fediversary today!! 🎂

It was a photo of my three #chickens standing in the snow in front of their coop, suspiciously eyeing the white stuff that had covered the grass.

A year ago, I was so horrified and fed up with the tech bro mentality (I still am, and it's getting worse every day) that I created Pixelfed and Mastodon accounts to try them out. I'm not active much on Mastodon, other than following a few news outlets and FotoVorschlag of course. But Pixelfed, you've won my heart! 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂, you lovely people, for making the past year a joy to be online! 🥹

So, as an official Fediversary post, here's another Henuary moment: Cleo, the runt of the flock, drinking some snow a few days ago. It's currently raining, and the snow has turned into soggy slush, so any chicken photos today won't be pretty.

This image shows a light-brown and white hen standing in a snowy outdoor enclosure. The hen’s feathers are a mix of soft browns and whites, with a small red comb on her head. The ground is covered in a layer of fresh snow, and the hen is perched on a small pile of snow. The enclosure is surrounded by wire mesh fencing, and wooden posts are visible in the background, likely part of the coop or run structure. The sunlight casts shadows across the snow, creating a bright and crisp winter scene.

A person’s hand holds a small snowball in the foreground, offering it to a white and brown chicken perched at the entrance of a coop. The chicken, with ruffled feathers and a prominent red comb, appears hesitant to step out into the snow. Behind it, two more chickens remain inside the coop, peeking out cautiously. The ground is covered in snow, and the coop is constructed with wooden and metal elements.

Bird flu confirmed in Pontyberem area

In response, the Welsh Government has declared a 3km Protection Zone and a wider 10km Surveillance Zone around the site. The Government says these restrictions are designed to stop the disease spreading and apply to anyone keeping poultry or other birds.

The council said its Animal Health Officers will visit homes, farms and businesses within the zones to check for birds and ensure biosecurity rules are being followed.

Officials stressed that the strain identified is dangerous for birds but presents a very low risk to people. The council added that residents who do not keep birds do not need to take any action.

Cllr Aled Vaughan Owen, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Decarbonisation and Sustainability, said:

“The identification of avian influenza in the Pontyberem area is very sad news for the poultry keeper involved, however I want to reassure residents that this virus presents a very low risk to human health. I urge the keepers of poultry or other birds in the area to follow the enhanced biosecurity measures.”

He also noted that all bird keepers across Wales remain subject to national prevention rules introduced earlier this month.

Maps showing the zones and full guidance are available on the Welsh Government website.

The council has reminded residents that dead wild birds such as swans, geese, ducks, gulls or birds of prey should be reported to the Defra Helpline on 03459 33 55 77 (option 7).

#FotoVorschlag: Federleicht // Light as a feather

My #chickens are a lot lighter now, as they're losing so many #feathers. They're in the middle of #moulting and especially the two older #hens look a bit scruffy (their feathers are growing back nicely though, as you can see). There's also rain and wind and as of today, they have to stay cooped up due to avian flu. Apologies for the pity party, I just wanted to ... shed some light on the daily struggles of our feathery friends. 😋

Our hens won't drink under a roof. Eat, sleep, poop, and lay eggs, but not drink.
Bowl of water on the back step? Fill 'er up, we've nearly emptied it already.
Bowl of water in the coop (near the feeder)? ABOMINATION.
Waterer on the back step? Sure, why not.
Waterer in the doorway of a doorless and derelict shed in the chicken run? Not going near it; would rather die.
Waterer randomly out in the run? At last, we were DYING!

The destructive might of the chicken horde has been held back by the chicken-wire-with-assorted-additions fence for a couple of days now, so I have been bold and sowed shade-loving flowers in the bed under the kitchen window.

It was built as a raised bed, but whoever built it didn't consider that burying the foundation's air vents under a foot or so of soil was not a great idea.

Hopefully the seeds don't mind a heavy clay soil under a thin layer of rich loam.

A long-exposure photograph capturing the rapid, blurred movement of a light-coloured chicken pecking at the ground in a garden. The chicken’s motion creates a dynamic, flowing effect, with its feathers and head appearing softly streaked. The chicken’s legs are blue from a spray used to mask injuries and aid healing.

My chicken tried to EAT a button right off my shirt! While I was wearing it!
Luckily it was well sewn on, but now she keeps stalking me in the garden with her beady little eye fixed on the button in question.
The button is made of coconut shell, and it's the sort you button a long tab to if you have your sleeves rolled up (I didn't).
Now I'm worried about what else on or about my person she might take it into her tiny little brain to consider comestible.

Our junior hen stopped laying in the coop! Provoked, it appears, by me mucking it out. No longer able to contemplate a pile of poo while laying, she's been forced to squeeze into a patch of mud under a pile of prunings in order to lay her eggs in sufficiently sordid surroundings.

The senior hen looks like she'll be coming into lay soon, so hopefully her good example will jostle the wayward witless one back into more hygienic habits.
