A goofy-looking large woodpecker with a bright red crest has his tongue out to probe into a branch. A wing feather is twisted around but has not yet fallen from his disreputable looking plumage. This is the male Lineated Woodpecker. Despite his messy appearance, he had a mate, and she was working the same tree, but even deeper in shadow and twigs so she's not included in this photo. There has been limited work on changes in molt phenology. In this study, Kittelberger et al. found that birds were advancing the timing of their body and flight feather molt over time. This study provides the first examination of trends in molt phenology of North American birds.

The Emperor's New Clothes.

This is a blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) in the bald stage of its annual molt. I've read the head feathers all fall out at the same time and grow back in about a week.

In this photograph, there is a blue jay on the right side of the gabled roof of a wooden bird feeder. The blue jay lacks head and neck feathers making it look rather odd. It also gives a glimpse of just how narrow the bird's neck actually is. The jay faces right and there is our of focus forest in the background.

Mauser ist der jährliche Gefiederwechsel. Im Spätsommer sind alle Federn eines Vogels abgenutzt, darum fallen sie nach und nach aus und wachsen nach. Das juckt und erschwert das Fliegen, darum sind derzeit alle Vögel ziemlich genervt.
Hier ist ein Steinwälzer, dem bei der Futtersuche auf einem steinigen Wellenbrecher die nächste Feder ausfällt.

Heading north along #Ontario's 🇨🇦 #NiagaraEscarpment brings us to the #BrucePeninsula, where these #Silurian #scorpions were found. Displayed in and named by scientists at the #RoyalOntarioMuseum, Eramoscorpius brucensis lived in the #ocean, but its relatives were among the first #animals on land. Its sturdy legs and the locality at which these #fossils were found hint that this #marine #scorpion may have already been venturing onto #beaches to #molt.

Did some sound design that I’m really happy with today. A process we (colab with Max de Wardener) are calling Molt. Begins with a field recording, from which amplitude information is extracted and turned in to voltages which are in turn used to modulate various functions on a synthesizer. The original recording is discarded, leaving a shadowy Molt.
