This black-and-white photograph captures a serene and quiet marina at night. The stillness of the water acts as a perfect mirror, reflecting the tall masts of numerous sailboats docked closely together. Each mast rises sharply into the darkness, creating a forest of fine, linear silhouettes against the night sky. The stark contrast of black and white emphasizes the tranquil atmosphere, with the boats and their reflections blending almost seamlessly in the dim moonlight or artificial lighting.
In the center, a faint cluster of lights glows gently, lending a focal point amid the vast darkness—perhaps from lamps on the dock or a distant pier. The subtle ripples in the water add texture and depth, while the surrounding darkness envelops the scene in stillness, evoking feelings of calm and solitude.
Artistically, the image explores themes of reflection—both literal and metaphorical. The duality of light and shadow, water and sky, presence and absence invites viewers to contemplate balance and silence. The use of black and white strips the scene of distraction, honing in on form, structure, and mood.
This photograph could also symbolize tranquility amid complexity—the dense, overlapping lines of masts suggest complexity, while the glassy water and quiet lights suggest peace. It’s a beautiful study of contrasts and harmony within a human-made environment set into the natural world.

Silêncio no 'Santa do Faralhão', #Setúbal Abril 2012 #silentsunday #dockyards #harbours #sustainablefishing #photography

Dear Friends,
A run of cold days here and, finally, a veneer of ice in the north shore harbors. This is the very base of Northport Harbor, #LongIsland. Our ever-pooping (look closely) resident Canada Goose stands on a single leg to help keep themselves warm. Edit: removed the window friday hashtag! #SillyMe

_The Evening Post_, 28 October 1924:
           LOCAL AND GENERAL

It is proverbial that troubles never come singly, and this was exemplified on Friday morning, when Commander #Middleton, a retired naval officer, residing in Clarke road, #Onehunga, discovered one of his #cows dead (states the “New Zealand Herald”), the loss being accentuated by the fact that it was a beautiful little Jersey, a 300lb [ca. 140 kg] tested butter-fat cow. The owner promptly paid a visit by motor to the stock inspector, in order to obtain his opinion whether it had died from eating the black clover which is now growing so profusely. Returning home, he found his garage and washhouse a mass of flames, and in a few minutes it was only a smouldering heap. However, in accordance with the custom in the Navy, the owner took his loss quite philosophically, consoling himself with the reflection that if the fire had occurred an hour earlier he would have lost his motor-car also.

_The Evening Post_, 7 September 1923:
THORNDON ESPLANADE TO GO
Authority was given the City Solicitor, Mr J. O’Shea, by the City Council last evening to negotiate with the Railway Department and the Harbour Board with reference to compensation to the council for the land taken by those bodies along the #Thorndon #Esplanade. The Mayor, Mr R. A. Wright, stated this morning that the esplanade had already been formally taken over as being a part of the land required for the new railway yard and harbour-front purposes, but it was not likely that it would be devoted to such purposes for some time to come. The Act gave those bodies the right to acquire land where it was necessary for the development of a scheme such as that proposed for Thorndon, and made provision that the amount of compensation to be paid should be settled by arbitration.

The image is a black and white photograph that captures a moment at the Auckland Ferry Terminal. It's a candid shot featuring two individuals: an adult male seated at a dining table, and a child standing behind him. The man appears to be in conversation with someone out of frame, while the child looks on with interest.

The setting is a public space with concrete structures typical of a ferry terminal. In the background, there are benches where other people can be seen sitting and resting. Above them, an overcast sky stretches across the image, suggesting it might be a cloudy day. The overall scene suggests a moment of everyday life at a busy transportation hub.

Please note that this description is based on the visible elements in the image and does not include any speculative or imagined content.
