#HawkMoth

Hawkmoth v0.21.0 is out.

Hawkmoth is a Sphinx extension to incorporate formatted C and C++ source code comments written in
reStructuredText into Sphinx based documentation.

v0.21.0 has improved support for documenting function pointer typedefs, fixes issues in looking up parsed results, and enables REUSE compliance.

Hawkmoth v0.20 is out!

Hawkmoth is a Sphinx extension to import C and C++ documentation comments into Sphinx based documentation.

The main new feature in this release is automatic configuration of the system header search paths. Unfortunately, libclang does not get them right out of the box on most distros, so we have to help it a little.

The Death's-head Hawkmoth (or Acherontia Styx) is iconic. In antiquity, moths and butterflies were said to represent a person's soul. Today they often represent rebirth, and cycles of life and death. In this design I've tried to incorporate some of those themes with the inclusion of a Latin language riddle (also known as an Aenigma).

Das Taubenschwänzchen ist mein liebstes Insekt. Einfach faszinierend!

The hawk moth is my favourite insect. Truly fascinating!

Yesterday, I saw a hawk moth lying on the ground and thought it died a natural death sadly. But then this morning, when I went to the same place I saw a very similar looking hawk moth perching on the wall. Can it be the same one?😲 Maybe it hit its head or something, got unconscious, and came round later? #hawkmoth #moth

Four images in one frame. One larger image on the left shows a hawk moth lying on the ground, looking lifeless. It has brown fur, dark-orange wings, and yellow and black striped belly. Its shape looks a bit similar to a shrimp. Three smaller images on the right side shows a similar looking moth perching on a glass wall (looking from different directions: from its side, back, and belly).

Garden visitor (UK). It's the first time I've seen this enormous caterpillar.
Elephant hawkmoth. Deilephila elpenor. Apparently.
(Thanks to iNaturalist and friends.)

Photo of a big caterpillar crossing a tarmac surface. It's mostly browny grey, with highlight colours of cream and black on its "head" and tapered "nose". A pair of coloured markings are almost like eyes.

I went for a walk yesterday in Zeeland and saw LOTS of caterpillars on the road at a certain point. Luckily there was little to no car traffic there. Most were black with spikes, those will become peacock butterflies (Aglais io, 🇳🇱 dagpauwoog). But I also saw a HUGE green one of the hawk-moth (Agrius convolvuli, 🇳🇱 windepijlstaart). Apparently those are rare in NL.

It’s National Moth Week, July 20-28, to celebrate the beauty, lifecycles and habitat of moths, so I’m reposting my eclipse of moths (the delightful term of venery for a group of moths) and also for my #InsertAnInvert2024 wildcard week.

This hand-printed lino block print shows 5 of the noctural moths of Ontario in front of the moon at a lunar eclipse. The 5 moths are: the gorgeous green Luna moth (Actias luna), 🧵1/

My linocut print of moon at lunar eclipse in oranges and brown against a very dark sky behind 5 moths: the gorgeous green Luna moth (Actias luna), the yellow and purplish-pink Imperial moth (Eacles imperialis), the Five-spotted Hawk Moth in brown with orange spots (Manduca quinquemaculata), the red-orange, black and cream Virgin Tiger Moth (Apantesis virgo), and the black and white White Underwing (Catocala relicta).

In white it reads “An eclipse of” above and “moths” below. I designed the typefaces to suggest the meaning of the words. "Eclipse" is full of crescent moon shapes. "Moths" is written in moth shapes.

We went for a little walk on our nearby trail the other evening. I don't know how I spotted this little dude but I'm glad I did! I haven't seen a hummingbird moth in years! So cute 🧡

More moths later but after a mild night the first Poplar Hawk Moth of 2024 has appeared. I adore these gentle giants with their cute fuzzy faces.

A palm-sized angular moth that looks like it has been hand-ripped from a magazine. It sits on my clenched fist. It is largely grey-brown with a purple tinge, and large scalloped, leaf-like wings that extend down and beyond the end of its abdomen. Each wing has a small pale eyespot and various white vein lines that run top to bottom.Face of Poplar Hawk Moth. Round, grey and felt-like with two eyes either side of a nose-like palp. A little Muppet-like. Two orange antennae extend left and right. Its wings are also extended but out of focus as thr the focus is the head. Its legs are gripping my finger.
