#iCloudDrive is so buggy, copying data off it to anywhere else is likely to result in an incredible amount of error-messages. You’ll need to click on OK and re-try as many times as there are files in the directories you’re trying to copy, or you’ll need to download an archive of your entire drive. This makes it extremely cumbersome and time consuming to migrate data off of #iCloud.

Also true of you download the folder before copying it.

<p>Time Machine backups, Spotlight search, iCloud Drive storage and QuickLook previews are each very useful when and where you want them. But there are occasions when you want to exclude folders and files from their reach, or items are excluded when you want them included. This article is a brief reference to how you can control exclusion and inclusion.</p>
<h4>Time Machine backups</h4>
<p>Time Machine has several mechanisms for excluding items from its backups. The first of those used to be detailed in its Standard Exclusions listed in the hidden file .exclusions.plist at the top level of every backup, but that file has gone missing in backups made since upgrading to Tahoe, and is nowhere to be found.</p>
<p>This listed several categories of exclusions, of which the first are apiExclusionPaths, added by individual third-party apps. The equivalent of what used to appear in the previous StdExclusions.plist was given under the standardExclusionPaths key, containing:</p>
<ul>
<li>.DocumentRevisions-V100 – the version database on each volume,</li>
<li>.Spotlight-V100 – Spotlight metadata,</li>
<li>.Trashes – contents of Trash folders,</li>
<li>.fseventsd – the File System Events database,</li>
<li>/Library/Logs – traditional text log files,</li>
<li>/Users/Guest – guest user files,</li>
<li>/private/var (partial) – various transient files,</li>
</ul>

<p>Extended attributes (xattr) contain a wide range of metadata, some of which are intended to persist with the file they’re attached to, others to be more transient. Depending on the type of file operation performed, macOS has an elaborate mechanism for determining which are preserved, and which are not. This article tries to explain how this works in macOS Tahoe 26.0.</p>
<h4>Xattr flags</h4>
<p>When first introduced in Mac OS X, no provision was made for xattrs to have type-specific preservation, and that was added later using flags suffixed to the xattr’s name. For example, the com.apple.lastuseddate xattr found commonly on edited files is shown with a full name of com.apple.lastuseddate#PS to assign the two flags P and S to it, and the most recent xattr com.apple.fileprovider.pinned, used to mark files in iCloud Drive that have been pinned, has the two flags P and X assigned to it for a the full name of com.apple.fileprovider.pinned#PX.</p>

Apple oficjalnie wyłączyło obsługę iCloud na urządzeniach działających pod kontrolą iOS 10 i macOS Sierra. Od teraz minimalnym wymaganiem są systemy iOS 11 lub macOS High Sierra.

Oznacza to, że kluczowe usługi takie jak iCloud Drive, Zdjęcia iCloud, Backupy iCloud, Pęk kluczy i Find My nie będą działały na starszych urządzeniach.

iOS 10 i macOS Sierra zadebiutowały we wrześniu 2016 roku. W praktyce zmiana dotyczy m.in. iPhone’a 5, iPhone’a 5c i iPada 4. generacji, które nie otrzymają już dostępu do iCloud.

W przypadku komputerów Mac sytuacja wygląda łagodniej – wszystkie modele zgodne z macOS Sierra obsługują również macOS High Sierra, więc użytkownicy mogą zaktualizować swoje urządzenia do ostatniego wspieranego systemu.

Combined Public Service Announcement and Today I Learned: if you have `CLICOLOR=1` on macOS, if you do an `ls` of a directory which is inside iCloud Drive, evicted files (i.e., those that cannot be immediately used, but need to be downloaded first from iCloud) show with a grey background… see below:
First, both files are in iCloud, but not locally available. They have a dotted cloud icons in the iCloud Status field of the Finder window, and a greyed background in the output of the `ls` command.
Second, the `cssday.pdf` file shows a filled circle with a down arrow as part of their iCloud Status, which represents the "Keep Downloaded" option (i.e., the file has been downloaded and is locally available), while the other file keeps the dotted cloud icon. In that case only the `Screenshot…` file is shown as grayed out in the output of `ls`.

3) Paste the command:

find . -type f -exec brctl evict {} \;

This is using the tool “brctl” which manages the CloudDocs daemon running on the Mac, calling the sub command "evict" to remove the download of any file that the "find" command discovers in the folder. Since “find" is a recursive tool, it will find anything in the current folder and below.

I just recovered 15GB of disk space on my Mac whose data is still in iCloud Drive.

I just learned a way to remove iCloud drive downloads from my local macOS disk without having to first download everything in the folder.

1) Open the Terminal app

2) Paste this command:

cd ~/Library/Mobile\ Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/

now by hitting TAB, terminal will list all the subfolders in your local iCloud drive folder, then start typing the name of whatever subfolder, hitting TAB to traverse down to where you want to be. Hit ENTER.

Ich mag #tidal wirklich. Nach drei Monaten Test-Abo #applemusic merke ich aber, dass es - oh Wunder - besser in die Apple-Welt integriert. Und das Angebot finde ich gleichermaßen gut - auch wenn ich die individuellen Mixe von TIDAL echt super finde.

iCloud Drive has to be the slowest file sync system I've used. It would seem each file that needs to be synced takes seconds for both the iCloud server and the Mac to agree if it needs to be uploaded or downloaded. At first glance, that seems fine, but try syncing a Git repo. Then try several. fileproviderd and bird processes get pegged at >100% CPU. The only way I've found iCloud Drive to back up at any pace is to zip the file you want to save and sync that archive. #IcloudDrive #icloud
